Keepin' Up With a Magical Summer
July 7, 2008
ORLANDO - Rising fifth year senior Brent Petkus may have ended last soccer season with a career low 1.15 gaa, but this summer he is living a collegiate dream - working as a cast member in Walt Disney World (WDW) in Orlando, Fla. Petkus, a Sport Management major, left for the `magical' internship just after the 2007 soccer season and will be returning to Bowling Green for the start of his final season with the Falcons in just a few weeks. Currently, Petkus serves as a tour guide on the ... his version of the story is much more interesting! Read on --- Click here to see Petkus in action on the Jungle Cruise. My internship at Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Fla. is hectic! I have been working 10-16 hour days taking in various jobs. One job I have is in guest relations My main duty is working at the attraction known as the World Famous Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom, which involves driving a boat, saying a script and attempting to be funny. The cruise is a funny journey through four rivers and three continents; examples of this are on YouTube , just type in WDW Jungle Cruise. I also work on parade control, for the night parade called "SpectroMagic". So far, it has been very interesting to see everything work and come together in a big company like Disney. If one person does something wrong the whole team feels the effect for it and someone has to pick up and do the job. Another is they are perfectionist here. Some examples are we have to direct - not point - with two fingers (known as the "Disney Point"), also if there is trash on the ground its common practice for a cast member (all park employees are known as "cast members") to pick up the trash regardless if they are working or not.
As of late, my friends from the park and I have been exploring various other areas in WDW and are trying to learn all we can about it. My personal ambition while I am here is to learn as much as I can about the Resort. I feel like now I am an expert at planning where to eat on the resort and all the little secrets that make this resort so amazing. My internship ends in August so I'll be driving back to Bowling Green just around the time of preseason. GO FALCONS! |
