Doug Boersma
DOUG BOERSMA - Head Athletic Trainer/Director of Sports Medicine

Doug Boersma came to Bowling Green State University in August of 2003 after serving as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Notre Dame since August of 1999, and oversees the medical needs of the department's 18 varsity sports. He is assisted by three other full-time staff members, five graduate assistant athletic trainers, and 35 athletic training students that are in the BGSU undergrad curriculum program.

Boersma was named the Director of Sports Medicine at BGSU in July of 2005. His involvement on campus includes AED Policy Committee member, AED Oversight/Crisis Committee member, Information Security Compliance Committee member, Blood Borne Pathogen Committee member, and drug testing site coordinator.  He also serves as the Mid-American Conference Sports Medicine Association Continuing Education coordinator.

At Notre Dame, Boersma worked closely with the Irish football program and oversaw the day-to-day athletic training needs of the men's ice hockey program as well as men's soccer and lacrosse teams during his four years. He also gained experience as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Kentucky and as an athletic training student at Purdue University. He earned his degree in athletic training from Purdue in 1997, and also earned his masters degree in health promotion from Kentucky in 1999.

At Kentucky, Boersma worked directly with the football and women’s gymnastics programs.  In addition, he coordinated the in-service educational programs for the athletic training students and staff. At Purdue, he worked with the men’s basketball, football, baseball and women’s tennis teams. Boersma also volunteered at the Purdue University Student Health Center’s physical therapy department.

The Highland, Indiana native and his wife, Cari, were married in the summer of 2000 and have three daughters, McKenna (Dec. 2002), Ashlyn (Jan. 2005), and Kayden (March 2009).

Curley-Jeff

JEFF CURLEY - MA, ATC

Joining the BGSU staff in the fall of 2004, Jeff enters his fifth year as a member of the BGSU Athletic Training staff. He is responsible for the athletic training needs of the Hockey and Women's Tennis teams at BGSU. He also supervises graduate assistant athletic trainers covering gymnastic and baseball. Prior to arriving at Bowling Green, Jeff spent five years as the Head Athletic Trainer at Adrian College (MI) where he directly covered football and supervised the Athletic Training needs for 15 other sports. Previously, Jeff was Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant Professor at Eureka College (IL) from 1995-1999. He also was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Morehead State University (KY) from 1991-1995.

Jeff graduated from Whittier College (CA) in 1989 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. In 1995, Jeff received his Master's degree in Athletic Training from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. During his time at UNC, Jeff worked with the women's Field Hockey team, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four, track and field and men's basketball.

A native of Vista, CA, Jeff is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and licensed by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board.

Jeff and his wife Lauren, also a certified athletic trainer, live in Bowling Green with their children Adam (16) and Morgan (8).

Annette Davidson
ANNETTE DAVIDSON - Assistant Athletic Trainer

Assistant athletic trainer Annette Davidson is responsible for the supervision, care, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for the Falcon football and the men and women's cross country teams. She also over sees the graduate assistant at men's soccer and women's track. While at BGSU Annette has worked with women's basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and gymnastics teams, and the men's soccer team. She is the Coordinator of the Wellness Committee for Student Athletes, and a member of the Positive Image Committee that educates the campus community about size diversity, body esteem, and health. Annette is the liaison to the curriculum department for the athletic training students and manages the students in the curriculum program.

Davidson was invited to work as an athletic trainer at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was also a member of the Olympic Sports Medicine Team, serving as an athletic trainer for the USA Track and Field Team at the Goodwill Games in New York City. As an undergraduate at BGSU she majored in health and physical education K-12. She still holds her certification in teaching. While receiving her masters degree she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the men's baseball and soccer teams, and the Ballet Program at the University of Akron.

A native of North Canton, Ohio and a graduate of BGSU, Davidson is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and licensed by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board. Davidson earned a Masters of Science degree in Education from The University of Akron. She and her husband, Ray Novak, reside in Bowling Green.

Chad Young

CHAD YOUNG - Assistant Athletic Trainer

Young is no stranger to the Falcon program, having served on the training staff in various capacities since 1996. Young spent the 2001-02 academic year working as an assistant athletic trainer at BGSU under a non-student letter of appointment.

Young is the primary athletic trainer for men's basketball and women's swimming. He also over sees and assist the graduate assistant at women's basketball and volleyball.

Young began as an athletic training student in the BGSU department of athletics in 1996, and later served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer before assuming full-time duties. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health education with a minor in athletic training from BGSU in 1999, and received his Master of Education degree in developmental kinesiology in August of 2001. Young is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and licensed by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTS:

Adam Leech

A graduate from Ashland University where he majored in Athletic Training. The Streetsboro, Ohio native is currently pursuing a masters degree in Developmental Kinesiology.

Jessie Bullis

A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Bullis graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in Athletic Training. Her major at BGSU is Developmental Kinesiology.

Adam Strypko

Adam Strypko

Adam hails from Big Rapids, Michigan and graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelors in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. He is concentrating on Sports Administration for his Masters Degree.

Stephanie Dyer

Stephanie Dyer

Originally from Sterling Heights, Mich., Dyer graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelors degree in athletic training. She is currently pursuing a masters degree in developmental kinesiology and is a graduate assistant athletic trainer who is responsible for gymnastics and cheerleading.

Marc Paquet

Marc is from Portland, Maine and is a graduate of the University of New England with a degree in athletic training. He is responsible for men's soccer and softball at Bowling Green and is pursuing a masters degree in developmental kinesiology.


 CLINICAL EDUCATION

Matt Kutz

Matt Kutz, Ph.D., ATC, CSCS 

(Clinical Education Coordinator) Matt Kutz, Ph.D., ATC, CSCS is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Education Coordinator. Kutz earned his Ph.D. from Lynn University, M.S. from University of Toledo in Exercise Physiology, M.Ed. from University of Toledo, and his B.A. from Anderson University in Athletic Training. Most recently, he served as an Assistant Professor and Director of Athletic Training Education at Texas State University. Prior to that, he served as an Assistant Professor and Co-Director of Athletic Training Education at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Kutz’s certifications include BOC Certified Athletic Trainer, ACSM-Certified Health/Fitness Instructor, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Dr. Kutz’s professional and research interests are in Human Performance and Injury Prevention, Leadership Development, and Professional Behaviors. Dr. Kutz is the author of the new textbook “Leadership and Management in Athletic Training: An Integrated Approach” (publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins). Dr. Kutz is a member of the CAATE Ethics Committee and is a USA Track & Field Level II Coach Educator. Dr. Kutz is a native of Northwest Ohio and worked as an athletic trainer in Toledo and surrounding areas for several years before entering athletic training education.

Chris Schommer

Chris Schommer, M.Ed., ATC/L

(Curriculum Coordinator) Chris Schommer returned full time to BGSU in 1997. He graduated from BGSU in 1989 with a Bachelors of Science in Education degree. He received his Masters of Education degree from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina in 1992.
Schommer returned to Northwest Ohio and was employed at the Medical College of Ohio, SportsCare Physical Therapy Department with high school responsibilities at Springfield High School. In 1995, he started teaching part-time at BGSU.
Schommer is the Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program, CAATE Accredited. Along with the responsibilities of being a Program Director, he has been the Program Chair for the GLATA Winter Meeting and has recently been named the co-winter meeting coordinator for GLATA. Schommer is currently a site visitor for CAATE, accrediting body for Athletic Training Education Programs in the United States. Chris Schommer is a Beavercreek, Ohio native and his wife Susan, a 1992 BGSU alumni, have three boys, Patrick, Nicholas and Samuel.
