Dolejs, Godbolt have multi-hit games in NE Ohio
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron got off to a fast start in each game on Saturday, as the Zips took a doubleheader from the Bowling Green State University softball team on Saturday (April 15). UA captured the twinbill by scores of 10-2 and 7-1 at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips (24-15, 12-7 Mid-American Conference) used small-ball to put together a big first inning in each game. UA scored four first-inning runs in both games to seize control early.
For the Falcons (8-29, 1-16 MAC), Peyton Dolejs had three hits on the day, while Reagan Williamson picked up a hit in each game.
Dolejs went 2-for-2 in the opener, with Williamson coming up with an RBI double and eventually coming around to score.
The second game saw Maycee Godbolt go 2-for-3 with a double and a homer, while Dolejs and Williamson each picked up another hit.
The Zips had a total of 12 hits in Saturday's opener, but infield hits set the table for both of the home team's big innings. Akron scored four times in the first inning and four more times in the fourth, with back-to-back infield singles playing a key role in each case.
Then, in game two, UA had two more infield hits as part of a five-hit, four-run first.
BGSU-AKRON GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Zips used 'small-ball' and speed to take an early lead. Brooke Sivek led off the home half of the first inning with a single, and back-to-back infield hits by Molly McChesney and Meagan Lee gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. Alexis Campbell followed with an RBI single,  and an Abigail Scheller double later in the inning plated a run as well. Campbell would score on a sac fly off the bat of Jaiden Bryant.
• UA added single runs in the second and third frames. Sivek walked in the second inning before stealing both second and third and scoring on a throwing error.
• In the third, Laurel DeVoe singled and scored on a Scheller double.
• UA starter Haley Croyle faced just two batters over the minimum through three innings, walking Sophie Weber in the first and allowing a Peyton Dolejs single in the second. But, the Falcons got on the board with a two-out rally in the fourth.
• Marti Henkel was hit by a Croyle pitch. The umpires initially sent her back to the plate, the freshman pointed out the spot on her hand where the pitch had hit her. The men in blue conferred once more and sent her down to first base.
• Henkel wasn't there long, as Reagan Williamson hit a ball to the wall in left for a double, with Henkel coming all the way around to score. Dolejs lined a ball to center for a hit, and continued all the way to third when the ball skipped past the center fielder, as Williamson scored easily.
• But, in the bottom of the fourth, one-out infield hits by Sivek and McChesney began another UA rally. Lee singled to score Sivek, and a Campbell double drove in a pair of runs before Scheller's base hit gave UA an eight-run lead. Croyle set down the Falcons in order in the fifth to secure the win.
• Scheller went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, while four of her teammates – Campbell, Lee, McChesney and Sivek – each had two hits and scored multiple runs.
• Dolejs was 2-for-2 for the Falcons, while Williamson had an RBI double and scored a run.
BGSU-AKRON GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Zips again scored early. Sivek and McChesney began the bottom of the first with singles, before the teams waited through a weather delay of over an hour. When play resumed, Lee walked, and a bloop single by Campbell brought home the game's first run.
• BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik induced the next two batters to hit ground balls to Weber at third, and each time, she fired the ball to Williamson at the plate for a force. But, Bryant's two-out single scored a pair of teammates, and the next two Zips reached as well, resulting in another run.
• The hosts added a run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Bryant and Tiffany Stevens, but Williamson and shortstop Wynnie Reid combined to cut down Stevens attempting to steal third.
• Meanwhile, UA pitcher Alexa DiFeo retired 10 hitters in a row to start the game. Dolejs hit a ball off of DiFeo's glove for a one-out single in the fourth, but the pitcher grabbed a scorching line drive off the bat of Weber and threw to first for a double play.
• Godbolt led off the fifth with a double to the gap in right-center, and she took third on a sac bunt by Katie Hutter, but was stranded there.
• In the Akron fifth, Sivek singled to score Bryant, then stole both second and third before coming home on an error.
• BGSU got on the board when Godbolt homered to left with one out in the seventh. Williamson followed with a single to right, but DiFeo retired the next two hitters to end the game.
• Bryant was 3-for-3 to lead the Zips, with Stevens, Sivek and McChesney each picking up a pair of hits.
• Godbolt was 2-for-3 with a double and a homer, while Dolejs and Williamson each singled.
