Nine-Run First Propels Falcons to Win over TTU, Saturday Split
March 04, 2023 | Softball
BGSU bangs out 16 hits in the nightcap after loss to USA earlier in the day
In the first game of the day, the Falcons fell to South Alabama, 12-0, in five innings.
Nine different players had at least one hit vs. TTU, with Peyton Dolejs going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Delaney Davis, Mackenna Fry, Maycee Godbolt, Hannah Hunt and Reagan Williamson all had two-hit games against the Golden Eagles. Davis and Godbolt scored three runs apiece, while Dolejs and Hunt crossed the plate twice.
Dolejs drove in three teammates, while Hunt and Madison Lenig each had a pair of RBI against TTU.
The Falcons sent 13 batters to the plate in that opening inning, getting five hits and drawing three walks. The half-inning also included a hit batter, a double steal and a wild pitch.
The offensive explosion came after the Falcons were held without a hit in the five-inning loss to USA in the opener. After beating BG, the Jags went on to defeat nationally-ranked Auburn later in the day.
The Falcons are now 6-11 on the season, with two games on tap for Sunday.
BGSU v SOUTH ALABAMA – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Jags took control early, with a four-run first inning. A Meredith Keel base hit and a pair of walks to load the bases. A Sasha Willems base hit plated a pair, and another run scored on a groundout. Emma Kropp capped the inning's scoring with a single.
• USA got a run in the second inning on a walk and a Willems triple, then broke the game wide open in the third. Kropp led off with a homer, and a one-out hit-by-pitch was followed by a double and a BG error. Shelby Garrett singled home a run, and Willems hit a three-run homer.
• Ellie Price, the third Falcon pitcher in the game, got the final five outs, allowing just one hit.
• But, Jenna Hardy threw a five-inning no-hitter, walking two batters and striking out six. BGSU's only two baserunners came in the third inning, when Scarlet Anderson and Ally Bezjak each drew walks.
• Willems and Kropp each went 3-for-3 for the Jags, with Willems driving in six runs. Kropp had a pair of RBI, while Gabby Stagner walked three times and scored each time.
BGSU v TENNESSEE TECH – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Golden Eagles took an early lead in this one, as a Nicolle Nysted single scored Tristen Head in the top of the first. But, the Falcons had an answer.
•  TTU starter Kaylan Cole retired the first batter she faced, but the next seven Falcons would reach base safely. Delaney Davis walked, Peyton Dolejs singled and a Maycee Godbolt single plated Davis and put runners at the corners.
• Godbolt and Dolejs successfully pulled off a double steal, with Dolejs scoring on the play, and walks to Reagan Williamson and Hannah Hunt loaded the bases. Madison Lenig was hit by a pitch to force home a run, and Mackenna Fry singled to drive home another.
• A wild pitch enabled Hunt to scamper home, and after a ground ball produced the second out of the inning, Makailah Dees singled to score Lenig with BGSU's sixth run.
• Gracelyn Woollen replaced Cole in the circle, but Dolejs greeted her with a triple that scored three more Falcons. BGSU had a 9-1 lead.
• BG was back at it in the second. Williamson singled, Hunt walked and a Lenig double scored pinch-runner Katie Hutter. Fry drew a walk, and a fielder's-choice grounder off the bat of Sophie Weber scored Hunt.
• And, in the third, Dolejs led off with a single, and after a Godbolt walk, Hunt's one-out double scored both runners. Fry added another base hit before the Golden Eagles got out of the inning.
• In the fourth, however, TTU cut into their 13-1 deficit, scoring five times. The visitors had five hits and a walk in the inning, and were aided by an error.
• BGSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out. Davis singled, Dolejs walked and Godbolt had a base hit. Then, a Williamson grounder to the right side plated Hunt.
• Trailing by eight, TTU was able to get a run in the top of the fifth to extend the game. Makayli Harris singled and stole second with one out. BG reliever Ellie Price struck out the next batter, but Woollen's two-out double allowed Harris to score and make it a 14-7 game.
• The Golden Eagles scored three more runs in the sixth. Three-straight singles loaded the bases before a fourth single, off the bat of Ella Bishop, scored a pair of teammates. A Harris groundout got a run across, and it was a 14-10 game.
• BGSU capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Dolejs reached on an error, and after a Godbolt grounder resulted in a force play, singles by Williamson and Hunt loaded the bases. Then, Marti Henkel's grounder got Godbolt home for the Falcons' 15th run.
• In the top of the seventh, Haeli Bryson was hit by a pitch with one out, but BG pitcher Mackenzie Krafcik then got Carmen Betts to hit a double-play ball that ended the game.
• The Falcons had 16 hits and nine walks in the game.
