DOUBLE(-DOUBLE) TROUBLE
If it's a game day for the women's basketball Falcons, there's a good chance junior Carly Santoro just might record a double-double. On Saturday (Dec. 30), Santoro led the Falcons with 14 points and 11 rebounds, marking her eighth double-double in 12 games this year.
As of Monday morning (Jan. 1), Santoro led the MAC and was tied for 11th in the nation in double-doubles. She now has a total of 13 double-doubles in her career.
Santoro posted three-straight double-doubles to begin the year, and then put together another three-game streak, with a double-double in each of BGSU's two wins at the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament and another vs. Valparaiso. And, she has posted a double-double in each of the last two games, at Cincinnati and WMU.
CARLY SPENDS THE WINTER IN DOUBLE-DOUBLE LAND (we hear it's nice there)
Junior Carly Santoro led the Falcons with five double-doubles a year ago, but had topped that total less than one-third of the way through 2017-18. She has recorded eight double-doubles through 12 games this season to date.
The last Falcon to have as many as eight double-doubles in a season was Alexis Rogers, who had eight in the 2013-14 campaign. No Falcon has had more since Rogers recorded 10 during the 2011-12 season.
DOUBLE(-DOUBLE) TROUBLE, REVISITED
Carly Santoro is not the only Falcon to visit Double-Double Land this year. Sophomore Andrea Cecil had her first career double-double on Dec. 18, with career-best totals of 26 points and 10 rebounds against Ferris State.
The Falcons are 7-2 this season when a player records a double-double. BGSU went just 4-6 in such games last season.
#WINNING
Roughly one-third of the way through the 2017-18 schedule, BGSU matched the program's win total for all of last season. The victory over Ferris State on Dec. 18 was the Falcons' eighth win of the season. The 2016-17 team finished the season with an 8-23 mark.
SHOW AN A = FREE FOR THE DAY (or the night, in this case)
The EMU game completes a glorious five-event stretch in which children showing an "A" on their report card will be admitted free. Stay in school, kids!
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons continue to own the best record in MAC history. Entering Wednesday's EMU game, BGSU has an all-time record of 402-196 (.672) in MAC regular-season contests, for the most wins and highest winning percentage of all league institutions.
And, BG leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories and highest overall winning pct. of any league institution.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU is off to an 8-4 start to the season. The Falcons are 4-1 at the Stroh Center, 3-3 in true road games and 1-0 in neutral-site contests.
The Falcons opened the season with seven games in a 19-day span. BGSU went 6-1 during that time, then began December by downing Xavier before a large School Day crowd at the Stroh. But, since that time, BG has dropped three of four games.
The Falcons fell to RV/RV South Dakota State before taking a break for fall semester exams, but got back in the win column with an 82-73 win over Ferris State. Then, however, BG suffered a loss at Cincinnati prior to the holiday break, and the Brown and Orange dropped a 67-58 decision at Western Michigan in Saturday's (Dec. 30) MAC opener.
Head coach Jennifer Roos and her staff – which is comprised of assistant coaches Jacey Brooks, Nick Moore and Jessie Ivey, director of operations Monique Rosati and video coordinator Amanda Cutcher – welcomed back a total of nine returning players, including three starters, from a year ago. The list of returnees includes two seniors, three juniors and four second-year Falcons.
Rachel Myers and Haley Puk make up the senior class, while Maddie Cole, Sydney Lambert and Carly Santoro each are in their junior year. Sophomores Andrea Cecil, Caterrion Thompson and Jane Uecker also return, as does Clare Glowniak, who is a redshirt freshman in terms of eligibility after missing the bulk of last season due to injury.
The nine returnees are joined by five freshmen, including Terri Battle, Madisen Parker, Angela Perry, Sierra Thompson and Kennedy Williams. Perry made her collegiate debut in Saturday's WMU game after missing the entire non-conference portion of the schedule due to injury.
BGSU's starters in all 12 games to date have been Cecil, Lambert, Puk, Santoro and Uecker. The two sophomores, Cecil and Uecker, each made the first start of their respective collegiate careers in the season opener.
Santoro was named to the Preseason All-MAC Team. She led the Falcons in scoring a year ago, averaging 12.0 points per game. Santoro is the Falcons' top returning rebounder as well, having pulled down 7.4 boards per contest last winter.
This year, through 12 games, three Falcons are scoring in double digits, with a fourth just shy of that mark. Santoro leads the way with 14.7 ppg, and is averaging a double-double, with a team-leading 10.4 rpg. Cecil (11.9 ppg) and Lambert (10.3) also are averaging over 10 points per outing, while Puk has 9.7 ppg. Uecker (6.1) and Sierra Thompson (4.4) are chipping in a combined 10.5 points per contest.
Santoro leads the team in assists and steals, with 2.4 apg and 1.8 spg, while Lambert is right behind her classmate in both categories (2.3 apg, 1.7 spg). Lambert has knocked down 24 three-point field goals this year, while Puk has hit 21.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
The Falcons finished the pre-MAC schedule with a record of 8-3. BGSU's eight non-conference wins represents the program's most since 2013-14, and the Falcons won as many non-league contests as in the previous two seasons combined.
The program record for pre-MAC victories is 12, amassed in the 2011-12 campaign. This year's BGSU team posted a winning non-conference record for the 14th time in the last 16 years.
PERRY MAKES HER DEBUT
Angela Perry made her BGSU debut in Saturday's game at Western Michigan. The freshman checked into the contest with 3:24 left in the second quarter, and hit a jumper later in that period for her first collegiate points. Perry had been sidelined for the Falcons' exhibition game and the team's first nine regular-season contests due to injury. She suited up for the Ferris State (Dec. 18) and Cincinnati (Dec. 21) games but did not see action.
SECOND-YEAR FALCONS SHINE
A trio of second-year Falcons had stellar performances at Western Michigan. Â Sophomore Jane Uecker scored 11 points, just one shy of her career high. Uecker had 12 points in BG's other trip to the state of Michigan this year, the Falcons' win at Detroit Mercy on Nov. 13. She also had a career-high three steals vs. WMU.
Another sophomore, Caterrion Thompson, scored eight points and pulled down a season-high four rebounds vs. the Broncos. Thompson was 2-for-3 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
And, redshirt freshman Clare Glowniak had a season-high seven points in just nine minutes on Saturday. Glowniak, who entered the WMU game with a total of four points on the year, went 3-for-4 from the floor, and added two rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot.
SCOUTING EMU
Eastern Michigan is 4-8 on the season, and the Eagles are 0-1 in MAC play. Eastern saw a two-game winning streak snapped with Saturday's 67-60 home loss to Kent State. The Eagles are 3-1 at home, 1-6 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this season. Three players are scoring in double digits, led by Courtnie Lewis with 12.7 points per game. Danielle Minott has 11.3 ppg and a team-leading 5.4 rebounds per outing, while Sasha Dailey has 10.6 ppg. A total of 11 different players have made at least one start for head coach Fred Castro. Last year, the Eagles finished with a 6-25 overall record and a 1-17 MAC mark. Castro welcomed back six letterwinners, including three starters, from that club.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Eastern Michigan, 51-16, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has captured 14 of the last 16 meetings. But, one of the Eagles' two wins during the last 12-plus years came in last season's lone meeting, as host EMU picked up an 81-74 win in overtime nearly a year ago (Jan. 25, 2017). Two years ago, in the teams' last matchup at the Stroh Center, the Falcons downed the Eagles by a 67-63 score (Jan. 27, 2016) in one of BG's top performances of the season. The Falcons won 13-straight meetings from the Eagles between 2005 and '15. BGSU is 28-4 in home games (including 3-0 inside the Stroh Center), 20-11 in road contests and 3-1 in neutral-site meetings with EMU over the years.
UP NEXT
Following the EMU game, the Falcons will conclude a two-game homestand with Saturday's (Jan. 6) contest vs. Ball State. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh. BGSU then hits the road for back-to-back games, facing Central Michigan (Jan. 10) and Akron (Jan. 13).
