Women's Soccer Adds Nikki Cox for 2018 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team and head coach Matt Fannon have announced the addition of Nikki Cox to the program. Cox, an Ohio native, is a transfer from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Cox will be a redshirt sophomore during the 2018 season and retains three years of eligibility.
Fannon said, "We are really excited to have Nikki join us. She is a tough, creative player that is going to enhance our attacking options."
Cox joined the Seahawks as a freshman for the 2016 season and remained with the team through the end of the 2017 season. IN 2016, she played in the first four games before suffering an injury for which she received a medical redshirt. Cox scored the game-winning goal in her first collegiate game, as UNCWÂ won 3-0 at Georgia Southern. The Seahawks won her second game 7-0 at South Carolina State, and she earned three of the goals for her first career hat trick. In just those four games, she posted six goals in 14 shots attempted and added an assist for a total of 13 points.
Cox returned from her injury in time for the start of UNCW's 2017 season against Virginia. She played in 19 games and made 14 starts, logging a total of 1,117 minutes. Cox scored the Seahawks' only goal in a 1-1 tie at Elon on Sept. 21, then assisted on the team's only goal in a 2-1 loss at Hofstra on Sept. 24. She finished the season with one goal, one assist, three points, 21 total shots, and eight shots on goal.
At Granville High School in Granville, Ohio, Cox was the most prolific offensive player in Aces' history. She set school records for goals (145) and assists (75) during her four year career for head coach Scott Forster, and she led the team to a 62-16-9 record during her four seasons. Cox scored at least 29 goals in every season and had a career-best 50 during her sophomore campaign as Granville won 19 games. As a senior, her goal output declined to 29, but she added a career-best 29 assists.Â
The list of accolades earned by Cox during her high school career includes four-time first team all-league honors, three-time first team all-district honors, three-time first team All-Ohio honors, three-time Granville team Most Valuable Player, 2014 Ohio Division II Player of the Year, and team captain during her junior and senior seasons. In addition, the Aces were three-time league champions during her four seasons, as well as state semi-finalists in her junior year and state runner-up in her sophomore and senior seasons.
Cox also lettered in golf and softball in high school. Her parents, Clint and Tami Cox, were both collegiate athletes. Her father played football at the University of Toledo, while her mother played basketball at Ashland University. Cox is the oldest of three children. She plans to major in business at BGSU.
