2006-07 Sweet Sixteen Team: Falcons Shatter School, MAC Win Records
January 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BGSU will recognize the '06-07 team as part of the program's Alumnae Day on Feb. 3
Just over a decade ago, the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program had a season for the ages.  The 2006-07 Falcons became the first Mid-American Conference team ever to advance to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships, and BGSU also became the first-ever MAC basketball team -- men or women -- to win more than 30 games.
The Falcons went 31-4 overall and 15-1 in MAC regular-season play. BG won the league's regular-season crown, then rolled through the conference tournament, downing Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Ball State on the way to the title.
The Orange and Brown earned a No. 7 seed in the Greensboro Regional, and picked up a pair of wins in East Lansing, Mich. BG posted the program's first NCAA Tournament win in 18 years with a 70-66 win over Oklahoma State, and the Falcons then downed No. 2 seed Vanderbilt, 59-56, in the second round. BG saw the season come to an end with a loss to No. 3 seed Arizona State in Greensboro, N.C.
The Falcons' 2006-07 senior class, comprised of Amber Flynn, Julie Gompers, Liz Honegger, Carin Horne, Ali Mann and Megan Thorburn, won a total of 103 games during their four years, setting a school record for wins in a four-game span. That group helped the Flacons to a 103-25 overall record, four 20-win seasons, four MAC Tournament championship-game appearances, three MAC regular-season titles and three league tourney crowns. They also made three-straight trips to the NCAA Championships, capped off by the incredible success of their senior season.
The '06-07 team won 25 games by double-digit margins, including nine games by 30 points or more. Those seniors ended their careers by winning 43 of their last 44 games vs. MAC opponents.
Two members of that club, Kate Achter and Ali Mann, earned All-America honors during their careers, while Liz Honegger started a school-record 127 career games and graduated as the school record-holder in both three-point field goals made and blocked shots. She still holds the school record for blocks.
Mann was the MAC's co-Player of the Year in 2007, while Achter earned league P-O-Y honors the following season. Mann (1,825 points; third), Achter (1,580; fifth) and Honegger (1,522; seventh) all still rank among the top-10 scorers i program history, while Carin Horne (1,341) is 15th on that list. The names of those four players still can be found all over the BGSU and MAC record books.
Head coach Curt Miller and his staff -- Jennifer Roos, Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert -- guided the Falcons to their incredible success. Miller coached Bowling Green for 11 seasons, winning the MAC regular season title eight times, the tournament title five times and the league's Coach-of-the-Year award six times. He went on to coach at Indiana University, and is currently head coach and general manager of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun.
