KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan broke a second-half deadlock wth 3:07 remaining on the clock and defeated the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team 2-1 on Friday afternoon (Sept. 29). The match was held in Kalamazoo, Mich. at the WMU Soccer Complex. Paige Casto evened the score in the 66th minute with her first career goal. With the loss, BGSU drops to 6-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. WMU is now 7-3-0 and 2-1-0 in the MAC.
WMU took the lead in the 21st minute when Tiffany Buckler crossed the far post to Grace Labadie, who scored her team-leading fourth goal of 2017. The Broncos held that lead until midway through the second half, when Casto corralled a loose ball outside fo the box and slid a shot in the lower left corner past goalkeeper Stephanie Heber. In the second half, BGSU pressured Heber with five shots on goal and earned three corners. However, Casto's shot was the only one to reach the net. Buckley found Emma Kahn just outside the box for the game-winner in the 87th minute.
COACH SAYS...
Head coach Matt Fannon commented, "This one is hard to take. We totally dominated the entire second half and thought we did enough to win the match. We need to learn how to put the game to bed when we are on top.
FIRST-TIME SCORERS
The Falcons feature eight first-year players on their 2017 roster, and four of them have scored their first career goal within the first ten games of the season. Casto's goal tonight was the first of her career, while Sophia Barnes and Marissa Swindell each scored their first last Sunday against Miami. Nikhita Jacob sent home her first goal at Detroit Mercy. Additionally, junior Alexis Fricke also scored her first career goal in 2017, during BGSU's season-opening win at Oakland.

The Falcons travel to DeKalb, Ill. to continue their two-match weekend with a contest against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sunday. The match begins at 2:00 p.m. and will take place at NIU's Soccer and Track and Field Complex. The Huskies fell on Friday night when Toledo's Hannah Scafaria scored a golden goal with 2:13 left in double overtime. NIU is now 5-4-1 and 2-1-0 in the MAC; they are 0-3-1 at home in 2017.
