BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team and head coach Kerrie Turner have announced their competition schedule for the 2018 season. The Falcons will take part in 12 regular season meets, including four home events at Anderson Arena and an impressive quad meet at the Seagate Center in Toledo. The 2018 schedule begins on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 and lasts through the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday, Mar. 24 and the NCAA Championships in April.
"The 2018 gymnastics season is filled with outstanding opponents and an opportunity for our program to achieve at a very high level," said Turner. Our MAC season will continue to be competitive, as several teams qualified for the 2017 NCAA post-season. After losing the MAC Championships by one-tenth of a point, our team is eager to work even harder this season."
The highlight of the 2018 schedule is BGSU's participation in the 2018 Elevate The Stage event. Elevate The Stage is a coordinated series of events at six locations across the United States. The events include both club and college meets and will be held throughout the gymnastics season. It begins in Reno, Nev. on Jan. 14 and continues through March 9 at locations in Ohio, Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia.
BGSU's participation in Elevate The Stage will take place at the Seagate Center in Toledo, Ohio on Friday, Feb. 23. The Falcons' competition in the quad meet will be among the best in the country. Denver and Michigan each finished in the top ten nationally in 2017 and competed in the NCAA Championships, while Utah State earned a berth in an NCAA Regional meet.
Turner said, "We are particularly excited for the Elevate event in Toledo. We will be competing on the podium against great competition in front of what is sure to be a large crowd. That will motivate us to be ready."
At home, the Falcons have three duals and a tri-meet at Anderson Arena. The home opener will take place on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m. against Utah State. Six days later, the Orange and Brown return to Anderson for their MAC opener at 6:00 p.m. against Eastern Michigan.
Turner's squad will immediately turn around from Elevate The Stage and compete on Sunday, Feb. 25 in a tri-meet against Central Michigan and Ohio State. That meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Anderson Arena. The home schedule concludes three weeks later, on Saturday, March 17, when the Falcons host Northern Illinois. In BGSU's last home meet against the Huskies, the Falcons broke the school record for cumulative team score.
"We love the opportunity to compete in historic Anderson Arena and in front of our amazing fans," said Turner. "We have a large team this year and will look to use that depth to make a great impact on the MAC standings and qualify for the NCAA post-season."
BGSU's schedule also includes seven road meets. The Falcons open the regular season at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 at Michigan State. The team also has dual events at Western Michigan (Jan. 28), Ball State (Feb. 11), New Hampshire (Feb. 18), and Kent State (March 9). There is also a quad meet at Denver with Ball State and BYU (Feb. 3), as well as a tri-meet at Illinois with Lindenwood (March 4).
The 2018 post-season begins with the MAC Championships, which will be held at Central Michigan University on Saturday, March 24. The NCAA Regionals are scheduled for April 7, and the NCAA Championships will take place on April 21 and 22.
The upcoming season will mark Kerrie Turner's 11th as head coach of BGSU Gymnastics. She commands a team that returns 16 of last year's 19 gymnasts, including sophomore Jovannah East and junior Kayla Rose. East was the 2017 MAC Freshman of the Year, finished in the top three of two events at the MAC Championships, and qualified for the NCAA Regionals on the vault and the beam. Rose won a MAC Championship with an epic floor routine and was an NCAA Regional alternate in that event. The team also welcomes eight new freshmen to complete a squad of 24 athletes.
