BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 shutout of Wright State University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10). The goals were scored by seniors Skylar Fleak and Rachel Winters, as the Falcons won on their home turf for the first time in 2017. Victoria Cope earned her fourth win and second shutout in goal, as BGSU improved its record to 4-2-0. The Falcons will play their final non-conference contest of the season when they host Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 at Cochrane Stadium.
The two teams played in the middle third for much of the first 20 minutes; the Falcons had the only two shot attempts in that time, both of which went wide. The Falcons finally broke through in the 22nd minute off a set piece. Maureen Kennedy took a corner kick and sailed a perfect strike to Nikhita Jacob. Jacob headed the ball to Rachel Winters, who beat Wright State goalkeeper Maddie Jewell for the score. The Falcons held that lead through halftime and had a 9-0 edge in shots at the break. In the second half, the Raiders peppered Victoria Cope with five shots, but Cope made a pair of diving saves to prevent the equalizer. Finally, with six minutes left, Kristin Tviet found Fleak open, and Fleak found the net from less than five yards out for the final 2-0 margin.
POST-GAME NOTES
Earlier in the season, goalkeeper Victoria Cope has a scoreless minutes streak that reached 214:58. Including today's shutout, Cope is building a new streak that has reached 189:28; the only goal she permitted in two matches this week came 0:32 into the match at Detroit Mercy. Cope (4-2-0) has allowed only six goals in 540 minutes (1.00 GAA) and has produced two shutouts. She now has 17 saves in 23 attempts for a .739 save percentage.
Senior defender Rachel Winters went almost three full years between her first and second collegiate goals. She needed only two weeks to earn her third. Winters scored her third career goal and second of the season in the 22nd minute against Wright State. Both of Winters' goals in 2017 have been game-winners, and she joints Skylar Fleak and Erica Hubert as the only active Falcons with multiple career game-winning goals.Â
Senior Skylar Fleak scored her fifth goal of the season to help lift BGSU to their 2-0 win over Wright State. Fleak entered the weekend as the Mid-American Conference leader in goals, assists, and points, and she increased her totals to five goals, three assists, and 13 points this week. Fleak provided a game-winning assist in the Falcons' win at Detroit Mercy on Wednesday. Fleak has now tied her previous season-best for points (13) and is one goal away from matching her previous season-high. With her 21st career goal, she moves into third place on BGSU's all-time goals list.
Kristin Tveit, a transfer from the University of Northwest Ohio, earned her first career assist fot the Falcons with a beauty of a pass to Skylar Fleak in the 84th minute. Nikhita Jacob, a true freshman, also earned her first career assist (and her first career game-winning assist). Jacob's feat comes on the heels of her first career goal (and first career game-winning goal), which she earned on Wednesday at Detroit Mercy. Maureen Kennedy added her second assist of the week and her fourth career game-winning assist with a perfect corner in the 22nd minute.
COACH SAYS...
Head coach Matt Fannon said, ""We started slowly again and didn't really get into the game. We had to change a couple of things to get our rhythym back. After that, we really got into the game. After the first 20 minutes or so, I really didn't feel like the result was going to be anything but the way we finished."
UP NEXT...
