July 24, 2017 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) has released its annual academic awards, and the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team continues to prove its excellence in the classroom. BGSU is ranked 14th nationally, which is an improvement of five spots over their 2015-16 ranking. It is the team's fourth consecutive year in the nation's top 20.
The cumulative grade point average (GPA) of the 20 Falcon gymnasts was 3.6065 for the 2016-17 academic year. That also represents an improvement over the previous year, when the team GPA was 3.5312. Individually, fourteen of the team's 20 members (70 percent) were named Scholastic All-America. Seven of those fourteen carried a perfect 4.0 GPA, and that number tied with Texas Woman's University for the most in the nation.
"Finishing 14th in the nation represents the dedication and incredible commitment of our gymnasts to academic success. I am proud of our 14 student-athletes who earned NACGC/W Scholastic All-America status," said BGSU gymnastics head coach Kerrie Turner. "These gymnasts have exemplified the meaning of student-athlete and have a true appreciation of the opportunities offered by a higher education at BGSU."
The seven Falcon gymnasts with a 4.0 GPA include seniors Lauren Feely and Rachel Reis. Both concluded their outstanding careers at BGSU last spring. The list also includes seniors-to-be Shannon Goniwiecha and India McPeak, as well as Julia Beyer, Taylor Livingston, and Taylor Worthington. Seven other Falcons earned recognition with at least a 3.50 GPA: Lexi Augustine (3.90), Rachel Creagh (3.60), Leslie Delgado (3.88), Lauren DeMeno (3.64), Katie Morsefield (3.69), Kayla Rose (3.59), and Shannon St. Jean (3.50).
"Assistant coach Marie Case and academic counselor Maggie Dunn have done an amazing job with the academic component of the gymnastics program, along with support from the Office of Student-Athlete Services," Turner said. "The culture of excellence in the classroom continues to be at the forefront of BGSU Gymnastics."
The Falcons also excelled in the gym during the 2017 season. The team's second-place finish at the Mid-American Conference championships was its best in 30 years, and they earned that spot with the second-best cumulative score in team history (196.400). Kayla Rose won an individual MAC Championship in the floor exercise competition. Feely and Jovannah East both advanced to the NCAA Regional, where they each scored 9.800 on the vault to tie for seventh place.
