The Mid-American Conference announced the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the eight spring sports during this 2016-17 academic season Monday (June 26), as a total of 186 students were voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions representing the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC Teams.
MAC OFFICE RELEASE
Of those 186 students named as 2016-17 Spring Distinguished Scholar Athletes, 12 don the Orange and Brown of Bowling Green State University. The BGSU softball program had a total of five student-athletes recognized, tied for the second-highest total in the conference. The women's outdoor track & field list also had five honorees from Bowling Green.
Six of the 12 Falcon student-athletes honored earned Distinguished Scholar Athlete honors for the second-straight year: Aliyah Gustafson, Rebecca Schott and Rachel Walny from the women's outdoor track & field program all were repeat selections, as were Fran Rodriguez of women's golf and softball's Briana Combs and Haley Schrock. Another softball standout, Aspen Searle, was named a Distinguished Scholar Athlete two years ago, but was injured last season and did not appear in enough games to qualify for consideration.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete award is a third-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the spring sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously-announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. First-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2016-17 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
