Bowling Green State University softball standout Aspen Searle has been invited to the Canadian Women's National Team Selection Camp. Searle is one of 36 players invited to the camp, which runs from Thursday (June 22) through Tuesday (June 27) in Mississauga, Ontario.
Official Release from Softball Canada
From that pool of athletes, the coaching staff will select two teams – the Women's National Team and the Women's Elite team.
Searle, a native of Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), will be a fifth-year senior in the 2018 season. She started all 56 of BGSU's games at shortstop in 2017, and was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year after batting .324. She led the Falcons in hits (58), doubles (14) and total bases (87), and tied for the team's RBI lead (35). Searle ranked second on the club in batting average, at-bats (179), runs scored (25), homers (five) and slugging percentage (.486). She had 16 multiple-hit games and eight multi-RBI contests, leading the Falcons in both categories.
With one year remaining in her BG career, Searle already ranks sixth in school history in career homers, RBI, batting average and slugging pct., and she is also ranked among the top-10 in hits, doubles, runs and total bases. Searle was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in both 2015 and 2017 (she was injured in 2016 and did not play in enough games to qualify), and also has been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.
The Canadian Women's National Team Selection Camp will include fitness testing along with a pair of intrasquad games. The games are scheduled for Saturday (June 24) and Sunday (June 25). Both games will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Tom Chater Park in Mississauga, Ontario, and are free and open to the public.
The two teams selected following the selection camp, the Women's National Team and the Women's Elite team, each will play a series of games over the remainder of the summer. The Women's National team will play an exhibition series against the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF) in Chicago, Ill. on June 30 and July 1, then will take part in the US World Cup of Softball from July 5-9 in Oklahoma City.
Both the Women's National Team and the Elite team will then compete at the Canada Cup from July 11-17 in Surrey, B.C. The Women's National Team will take on the Akron Racers of the NPF on July 31 and August 1 in Akron, prior to competing in the WBSC Pan American Women's Softball Championship. The latter event is scheduled to run from August 4-13 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The team will later travel overseas to compete in the Japan Cup from August 25-28.
