First-Year Falcon led the Brown and Orange in hitting
Bowling Green State University softball standout Kendyl Wheeler has been named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Freshman Team. The league office announced the All-MAC and All-Freshman Teams and specialty awards on Tuesday afternoon (May 9).
Wheeler had a stellar freshman season for the Falcons, leading the team in hitting. She played in 44 of the team's first 46 games of the year, starting all 44, before suffering an injury that forced her to miss the final 10 games. A native of Plainfield, Ind. (Plainfield H.S.), Wheeler paced the Falcons in batting average, both overall and in conference games, in her initial season in the Orange and Brown.
Wheeler batted a team-leading .328, with her 43 hits including six extra-base hits. The right fielder led the team with three triples, and she was third on the team in slugging percentage (.412) and stolen bases (five) and fourth on the Falcons in both hits and total bases (54).
In MAC games, Wheeler hit a BG-best .366, going 15-for-41 at the plate. She also led the Falcons in on-base percentage (.381) and slugging pct. (.512), and was third on the Falcons in total bases despite missing nine of the team's 24 conference contests. Wheeler also helped solidify the BGSU defense, making both the routine and the spectacular plays in right field.
She finished fourth on the team with 14 multiple-hit games, and had three multi-RBI contests as well. Just prior to suffering her injury, Wheeler had a four-game stretch in which she went 7-for-11. That was part of a five-game hitting streak that tied her season best.
The Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 24-32 and a MAC record of 10-14. BGSU, picked to finish last in the MAC's East Division, posted six more overall victories and four more conference wins than the previous year.
