ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team battled out of an early 2-0 deficit, but a seven-run fourth led Ohio University past the Falcons on Saturday (May 6) afternoon by a score of 9-4. The game was played at OU's Bob Wren Stadium.
"The turning point in the game was obviously the fourth inning," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We did a great job battling to tie the game, but then they score seven in the bottom half, and that's just completely deflating. But we left so many runners on base throughout the game. Jake Wilson gave us a huge two-out hit, but we didn't have many others with men on base."
Bowling Green is now 11-30 overall, and 6-14 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio claimed the series with the victory. The Bobcats are now 22-23 (8-9 MAC) on the season.
Bowling Green's fourth-inning rally started when Joe McGuinness was hit by a pitch with one out. Justin Mott then singled to left, and with two outs, Nick Glanzman kept the inning alive by walking to load the bases. Jake Wilson then delivered a two-out, two-strike single to left-center to knot the game at 2-2.
Randy Righter provided Bowling Green's two additional runs with one swing of the bat. With the Falcons down 9-2 in the seventh, Righter clubbed a two-run shot to right field. For Righter, the home run was his fourth on the season.
Mott pushed his average up to .312 on the year with a 2-for-3 day. He also scored a run. Righter went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Wilson's single allowed him to go 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Brad Croy pitched a great game in relief. He blanked the Bobcats over 3.1 innings, allowing three hits while walking just one batter. Chandler Stillings and Addison Rospert combined to hurl a scoreless eighth inning. Stillings racked up a strikeout and recorded two outs, and then Rospert set down the only batter he faced to pitch Bowling Green into the ninth.
The Falcons will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Falcons final weekend of conference play will take place next weekend at Steller Field when Western Michigan comes to Bowling Green.
