Combs, a pitcher, was named to the Academic All-Districtâ„¢ Second Team. A native of Northville, Mich., pitched in eight games this season, starting four, before suffering an injury to her pitching hand. She had a 1-3 record in 21 2/3 innings in the circle. Combs picked up a victory on opening day, firing a complete-game two hitter in an 8-1 win over Niagara. She retired 16 consecutive batters during one stretch in that win.
Despite the injury, Combs has continued to help the Falcons in a pinch-running role. She has appeared in each of BGSU's last four games, and in five of the last six contests. Combs has scored a run in each of the last two weekends, including on Saturday (April 29) in BGSU's Senior Day win over Akron at Meserve Field.
In the classroom, Combs earned her undergraduate degree in August of 2016, as a sport management major with a minor in general business at BGSU and a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Business at BGSU, and again has a perfect 4.000 GPA entering the Spring 2017 semester. Combs is on track to earn her master's degree in August, and then plans to attend law school.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District™ Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
The Falcons of head coach Sarah Willis, 24-29 overall and 10-11 in Mid-American Conference play, head to Northeast Ohio to close the regular season. BGSU, in the battle for a MAC Tournament berth, is scheduled to play three games at Kent State University this weekend. The Falcons are currently tied for eighth in the overall MAC standings, and the top-eight teams following this weekend's action will qualify for the MAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday (May 10) at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
