Three Falcon Teams Recognized For APR Excellence
May 03, 2017 | General, Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Gymnastics
Indianapolis, Ind. – For the second year in a row, three Bowling Green State University athletic programs have received NCAA Public Recognition. Teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport during their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) earn recognition. BGSU's men's cross country, women's golf, and gymnastics were among the 1,203 Division I teams to receive the honor.
"Having three teams be recognized in the top ten percentile in APR is an amazing accomplishment and our teams should be extremely proud," Chet Hesson, Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services, said. "Each of our teams have been recognized in previous years and their representation on this esteemed list showcases the dedication of the coaches and student-athletes to academic success."
Throughout the 12-team Mid-American Conference, only 25 teams received NCAA Public Recognition. BGSU was one of three MAC schools with at least three teams honored. All 12 MAC institutions had at least one team recognized this year.
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 10. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 984 to a perfect 1,000, with 1,090 teams earning a perfect score.
Brown University and Dartmouth College both earned the highest number of Public Recognition Awards with 19 teams, followed by the College of the Holy Cross with 18. The Ivy League had the most teams recognized of any conference (106), followed by the Patriot League (97) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (88).
The College of the Holy Cross led all schools in terms of percent of teams receiving honors with 75 percent. Gonzaga University and Dartmouth College followed with 73.3 and 73.1 percent, respectively.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or quarter, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 academic years.
