BGSU Football Unveils Military Appreciation Helmets
May 29, 2017 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio- For the second consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University football team will wear commemorative helmets when the team recognizes Military Appreciation Day. The helmet, which will be worn Sept. 30 vs. Akron, will recognize the students who attended BGSU and died while defending our country.
Â
On each side of the brown helmet, the BGSU logo is overlayed with the colors of the United States of America. Down the center of the helmet is an orange stripe that includes the names of 111 students from Bowling Green State University who have died in the line of service. On the back of the helmet, the number "111" is shown at the bottom of the stripe down the center.
Â
A year ago, Bowling Green State University Athletics partnered with David Ridenour of the BGSU Army ROTC Alumni Society and a 1970 Bowling Green graduate to compile the list of names. Ridenour served in Vietnam from 1971-72.
Â
BGSU unveiled a similar helmet last year in which Ridenour stated, "Bowling Green State University has had a proud tradition of educating and supporting students who have made significant contributions to our country, community and BGSU. It is important that we never forget the sacrifices of our men and women in service to our country, particularly the 111 men who made the supreme sacrifice. BGSU is commended for remembering them on Military Appreciation Day. As a veteran and graduate of BGSU, I am proud of my Bowling Green State University for this endeavor."
Â
Three years ago, Bowling Green Athletics installed POW/MIA Chairs of Honor in Doyt L. Perry Stadium, the Stroh Center and the BGSU Ice Arena. BGSU unveiled the first chair at The Doyt on Sept. 6, 2014 when the Falcons hosted Virginia Military Institute (VMI). A chair was installed in the BGSU Ice Arena when the Falcons hosted Miami on Oct. 10, 2014 and was added at the Stroh Center on Nov. 7, 2014 as the team played Notre Dame College.
Â
All active military and veterans receive free admission to the Akron game. Discounted tickets for family and friends are available for $13. Please call 419-372-4019 for the free admission offer and discounted tickets.
