Seven Falcons Named Athlon Sports Preseason All-MAC
May 22, 2017 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – Athlon Sports released its annual Mid-American Conference Preseason All-Conference Team Monday and Bowling Green had seven players named, including three on the first team.
Wide receiver Scott Miller, offensive lineman Tim McAuliffe and punter Joseph Davidson were all named to the first team. The trio of selections was tied for the most among all MAC East Division schools, equal to Ohio. Offensive lineman Ryan Hunter and defensive lineman Gus Schwieterman were named second team, while running back Josh Cleveland (listed as an all-purpose back) and defensive back Jamari Bozeman were named third team.
Miller was named first team All-MAC a year ago after catching 74 passes for 968 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 19 kick returns and three punt returns on the season.
McAuliffe is the centerpiece of a strong offensive line and has been named to the Rimington Watch List three times in his career, given to the best center in the country. He was named third-team All-MAC a year ago and has started 39 games in his career.
Davidson is one of the top punters in college football and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award a year ago, given to the best punter in the country. He was a First Team Academic All-American and was named fourth team All-American by Phil Steele.
On the second team, Hunter has started all 26 games on the offensive line over the past two seasons. He has helped pave the way for two different 1,000 yard running backs in the past two seasons (Travis Greene in 2015 and Fred Coppet in 2016), as well as protecting quarterback Matt Johnson in 2015 as he broke the MAC record for touchdown passes.
Schwieterman started 10 of the team's 12 games a year ago and led the Falcons with 12.0 tackles for loss. He also had a team-high five quarterback sacks. Schwieterman has started 23 games in the past two years.
On the third team, Cleveland is an explosive running back who averaged a team-best 6.4 yards per carry. His 649 yards on the ground were second on the team and caught nine passes. He closed 2016 with back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances.
Bozeman was a third team All-MAC performer a year ago as a sophomore after starting all 12 games. He was also a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and had a team-high three interceptions. His 71 tackles were second-most on the team and his two interceptions against Akron led to a critical late-season victory.
Bowling Green went 4-8 in 2016 a year after appearing in three consecutive MAC Championship games. The Falcons, though, closed the season with three consecutive wins, then reeled in the No. 2 recruiting class in the MAC, one of the best classes in program history. BGSU opens the season Sept. 2 at Michigan State before the team's home opener Sept. 9 against South Dakota.
