Pohlkamp Named WCHA Player of the Month for March

EDINA, Minn. – After posting a 2.00 points per game average with 10 points in five Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff games, senior Matt Pohlkamp of the Bowling Green hockey team has been named WCHA Player of the Month for March.
On March 3, the senior forward fueled the Falcons 6-1 scoring spree with a four point performance, giving Bowling Green a game up in the best-of-three series against Ferris State. The four point night tied his career-high and was a new season best for the senior, and was followed up with a pair of assists in Saturday's 5-3 win to seal the weekend sweep of the Bulldogs and a six point weekend for Pohlkamp.
In the WCHA semifinals, Pohlkamp tied the game at 2-2 for the Falcons at Bemidji State just 32 seconds into the third period, and the teams headed to overtime. When the Falcons were down 1-0, the Baxter, Minn. native also tallied the assist on Kevin Dufour's game-tying goal, giving him a two point night in the 4-3 overtime win. To round out the sweep of Bemidji State on Saturday, Pohlkamp scored the game-winning goal in the third period to propel the Falcons to its first Conference Championship appearance since 1988.
Heading into the WCHA Championship the Falcons were on a seven-game win streak, while Pohlkamp posted nine points in the last four WCHA Playoff games. Midway through the third period of the WCHA Championship, the Falcons found themselves down 2-0, until Joe McKeown scored to make it a one-goal game. Just 24 seconds later, Pohlkamp struck to tie up the game at 2-2. Pohlkamp's goal ultimately resulted in forcing double overtime play before the game was decided.
A two-way player, Pohlkamp also tallied eight blocked shots through the five games of March, in addition to averaging 3.80 shots per game. Pohlkamp led the Falcons through the WCHA Playoffs with his 2.00 points per game average and five goals. Additionally, Pohlkamp topped the Falcons with a plus-8 rating on the ice in the month of March.
Pohlkamp was awarded WCHA Player of the Week on March 6 after the six-point series against Ferris State. It was the first weekly honor in the Baxter, Minn. native's career, ultimately leading to his first Player of the Month accolade.
At the conclusion of the 2016-17 season for the Falcons, Pohlkamp signed a professional hockey contract is currently playing for the Toledo Walleye of the East Coast Hockey League. Pohlkamp has totaled one goal and two assists for three points through six games played, paired with a plus-2 rating on the ice.
