April 24, 2017 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team is set to head to Kent State University on Tuesday (April 25) to battle the Golden Flashes at Schoonover Stadium. The ballgame, which will be a non-conference contest, will wrap up the season's home-and-home schedule between the two teams. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
"This will be another strong midweek opponent for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We played a great game against them at our place, and I'm sure that they will come out motivated to get us back. This is an extremely difficult place to win a game, and we'll need to execute at a very high level if we want to get a win."
In the first game of the season series, the Falcons earned a 9-3 victory on April 11 at Steller Field. The win marked BGSU's first in the regular season over Kent State since 2014. In the 9-3 win for the Falcons, Randy Righter went 5-for-5 at the dish with a home run, while Greg Basalyga registered three RBI.
Chandler Stillings allowed two runs over 4.2 innings in the start, while Brad Croy and Nathan Lohmeier pitched 2.1 innings and 2.0 innings, respectively, allowing a total of two hits. Lohmeier did not yield a single hit over his 2.0 innings of work.
The Falcons are coming off an extremely competitive week. BGSU started the week with a crushing 6-5 loss at Youngstown State. The Falcons lost on a two-run, walk-off home run, and then lost in 13 innings by a score of 8-7 to Central Michigan on Friday. However, Bowling Green responded with an impressive 3-2 victory over the MAC-leading Chippewas on Saturday, before dropping the Sunday contest, 8-2.
Bowling Green is now 10-25 (5-10 MAC) on the season. The Falcons are one game out of a spot in the MAC Tournament with nine more conference games to go. Offensively, Justin Mott (.307), Greg Basalyga (.303) and Randy Righter (.293) are having standout seasons for the Falcons. Freshman Jake Wilson is hitting .260 and is tied for the team lead with Basalyga with 21 RBI.
Left-handed pitcher Kody Brown just wrapped up a career week for the Orange and Brown. The southpaw logged 6.2 innings across two separate appearances, and he allowed just two walks, and no other base runners. Brown hurled 2.0 perfect innings at Youngstown State on April 19, before throwing the best game of his collegiate career on Friday (April 21) versus Central Michigan.
Brown pitched a career-best 4.2 innings, and struck out a career-high four batters, which doubled his previous career high. He lowered his ERA by 1.53 on the week, and now owns a 4.07 ERA on the season.
The Golden Flashes will enter Tuesday's game red hot. KSU has won five in a row, and seven of its last eight. The Golden Flashes are 24-12 (10-2 MAC) in 2017. The Golden Flashes are hitting .307 as a team, while the team owns a 3.79 ERA. KSU has seven players hitting .300, and five pitchers with sub-4.00 ERA's.
After Tuesday's game, Bowling Green will begin preparation for a three-game home series versus Miami University. The series will begin with 3:05 p.m. start on Friday, April 28. The Saturday (April 29) and Sunday (April 30) games are slated to start at 1:05 p.m.
