CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Jovannah East and Lauren Feely completed the 2017 season for the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team when they participated in the NCAA Regional at Champaign, Ill. on Saturday afternoon. This was the tenth consecutive season in which Falcon athletes have competed at a regional meet.
East qualified for the regional on the vault and the balance beam and became the first BGSU gymnast to ever serve as an individual competitor in multiple events at a regional meet. She rotated with Eastern Michigan during the meet. Feely was an individual qualifier on vault; this was her first individual appearance at a regional. She was paired with Ohio State.
East concluded her freshman season by earning a 9.800 in both of her events. East finished the vault as part of a four-way tie for seventh place among the group of 42 vault competitors. On the beam, she tied for 22nd place. East finished 2017 with 28 scores of 9.800 or better for her 32 performances. She averaged 9.848 for 13 vaults and 9.796 for 13 beam routines.
Feely was awarded a 9.800 following her vault. She joined her teammate East in the seventh-place tie. Feely's regional performance was the final one of her outstanding career for BGSU. She ends her time as a Falcon as a two-time MAC champion, a three-time All-MAC performer, and an Academic All-American. Feely, who was the 2015 MAC co-champion on vault, ends 2017 with a 9.820 average on the apparatus. She vaulted 52 times in her career and ends with a 9.793 average.
"I am so incredibly proud of the effort and performances that Jovannah and Lauren achieved today," said BGSU gymnastics head coach Kerrie Turner. "Competing at the NCAA post-season level is intense, and both athletes handled it with confidence and great character. Hitting routines and scoring 9.8s is a tremendous accomplishment."
The seventh-place tie by East and Feely on vault is the best by any BGSU gymnast in an individual event at regionals since Marny Oestreng won the floor exercise championship and placed third on the uneven bars in 1999. Feely placed sixth in the all-around competition at a 2016 regional, and Alyssa Nocella tied for sixth in the all-around in 2015.
Sophomore Kayla Rose also traveled to the NCAA Regional as an individual alternate for the floor exercise competition.
