TOLEDO, Ohio – The 2016-17 season for the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team ended on Monday (March 6) night, as the University of Toledo dealt the Falcons a 77-62 loss in the First Round of the MAC Tournament. The game was played at UT's Savage Arena in front of 4,085 fans.
Bowling Green ends the season with a 13-19 record. The Falcons went 7-11 in Mid-American Conference play. The seven wins are two more than last season's total in head coach Michael Huger's first season in 2015-16. Toledo advances to the quarterfinal round on Thursday.
"We didn't do a good job on the defensive end," said head coach Michael Huger. "We didn't execute what we were supposed to. We had a game plan, and we just couldn't execute. Offensively, when you miss layup, after layup, there's nothing else you can do. You have to be able to make layups."
Seniors Wes Alcegaire, Ismail Ali and Zack Denny played their final games as Falcons. Alcegaire led the team in scoring with 17 points, while also adding four rebounds and three assists. Ali went 4-for-4 from the field, and concluded the game with eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Denny added six points, one rebounds, and one steal.
The Falcons trailed by just four points at 32-28 at the half. The Rockets quickly claimed a 40-30 lead to start the second half, but Bowling Green would answer. The Falcons got to within four points multiple times. Trailing by a score of 42-38 with 15:42 remaining, Toledo went on a 25-5 run to put the game out of reach.
For the game, Bowling Green shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53). The Falcons shot 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from the floor and 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the free throw line. On the flip side, Toledo shot 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) for the contest, including an 8-for-23 (34.8 percent) mark from three-point range. The Rockets shot 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the charity stripe.
Bowling Green registered 29 rebounds, while recording 12 assists and 11 turnovers. Toledo posted 39 rebounds, 18 assists and 12 turnovers. Both teams totaled 32 points in the paint and also tied with 17 bench points and two fast-break points. However, Toledo scored more points off turnovers (16-7) and had more second-chance points (12-2).
Toledo native Demajeo Wiggins registered 10 points and three rebounds. Freshman Rodrick Caldwell scored seven points, while fellow freshman Dylan Frye totaled five points. Redshirt-sophomore Rasheed Worrell notched five points and four rebounds. Sophomore Antwon Lillard finished with four points and five rebounds.
For the Rockets, senior Jonathan Williams scored 18 points. Senior Steve Taylor Jr. posted nine points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt-freshman Luke Knapke had 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaelan Sanford had 12 points and two assists.
