For the second-straight day, sophomore Brooke Parker pitched well enough to win, but suffered a loss. She scattered seven hits against the Cardinals, but U of L starter Maryssa Becker allowed only two Falcon hits. And, Becker accounted for the game's only run, aiding her own cause with a leadoff homer in the fourth.
In the nightcap, sophomore Meredith Miller picked up her second win in as many days, throwing six innings of three-hit ball and allowing one run, which was unearned. Miller improved to 4-1 on the season, and the Falcons are now 8-10 after Saturday's split.
Senior Sami Parave had a key hit in that sixth-inning uprising against the Sycamores, with a pinch-hit, two-run single.
"Overall I was pleased with our play today," said BGSU head coach Sarah Willis. "Brooke Parker and Meredith Miller both pitched very well and gave us a chance to win. We ran into a very good pitcher in the Louisville game, but we had a few chances on offense and were unable to take advantage of them.
Â
"Against Indiana State, we put a big inning together to break the game open, and we got contributions from numerous players up and down the lineup. Brooke and Meredith both did a great job of preventing our opponents from putting together a big inning and giving us a chance to win today."
The U of L game saw the teams battle through three scoreless innings, with each team only getting two baserunners during that time. Redshirt junior Aspen Searle drew a two-out walk in the first inning, but could advance no further, and sophomore Alex Sorgi also was stranded at first after reaching on a Cardinal error with two down in the third.
For the home team, Jordan McNary led off the bottom of the first with an infield single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. But, Becker's one-out grounder was snared by BG third baseman Haley Schrock, and the senior looked McNary back to second before firing to first for out number two. Then, Parker struck out Alison Szydlowski to end the inning.
Tiarra Sanabria reached on a two-out single in the second, but the next batter, Blaire Bass, hit a grounder to the right side. As Sanabria headed toward second and BG second baseman Katee Hinkle went for the ball, it hit Sanabria in the leg, and she was called out to retire the side.
Parker retired the Cards in order in the third, and BG put a pair of baserunners aboard in the fourth. Searle reached on an error, and redshirt junior Chelsea Raker singled through the left side. Schrock reached on a fielder's choice, with Raker retired at second and Searle advancing to third. But, as the play wound down, Schrock was ruled out for leaving first base, and Becker then got an inning-ending grounder.
Becker homered to lead off the U of L portion of the fourth, and that would prove to be the winning run. Parker bounced back to strike out the next two batters, and after Megan Hensley singled, the BG soph got Sanabria to hit a soft liner to Schrock at third.
Freshman Logan Everett battled Becker through a long at-bat to lead off the fifth, working her way back from an 0-2 count, fouling off several pitches and eventually drawing a walk. Sophomore Hannah Giammarino's sac bunt sent pinch-runner Briana Combs to second, but Becker got a strikeout for the second out, and Combs was cut down attempting to advance to third with Sorgi at the plate.
In the sixth, Sorgi walked and promptly stole second. One out later, Searle singled under the outstretched glove of shortstop Caitlin Ferguson, and Searle then stole second herself, putting two runners in scoring position. But, Becker got two big outs, striking out each of the next two BG hitters to escape the inning unscathed.
Parker kept it a one-run game despite Louisville's best efforts to increase the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Becker led off with a double, and Szydlowski's grounder was snagged by a diving Searle, who kept it from going through the infield and into center. But, the shortstop had no play at any base, and there were runners at the corners with no outs. Parker, however, got the next two hitters to loft lazy pop flies into shallow right. The first was caught by rightfielder Kendyl Wheeler, and the second was grabbed by second baseman Hinkle, with the runners forced to hold. Then, Sanabria's grounder resulted in a force play at second base to end the inning.
But, Becker worked a one-two-three seventh inning to lock down the win for the Cardinals (12-6). She threw 72 of her 107 pitches for strikes, walking three Falcons and striking out 10 in her complete-game two-hitter.
Parker needed only 87 pitches, throwing 59 for strikes, in her complete-game effort. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
In the Indiana State game, the Falcons had at least two baserunners in each of the first five innings, but the Falcons could only muster one run during that time. But, BGSU's sixth inning saw the Brown and Orange pound out seven hits, including a pair of doubles, to break the game open.
Sorgi walked to begin the game, and Wheeler singled, but both were erased on a double-play ball. Raker drew a walk to put a pair of runners aboard, but ISU starter Kylie Stober got a foul pop to the left side of the infield for the third out.
Miller allowed a one-out single to Leslie Sims in the home half of the first, but a double play ended that half-inning as well.
In the second, junior Laine Simmons walked with one out, but was erased on a grounder by freshman Taylor Blevins. On the play, however, Blevins made it to second base after an ISU error, and she scored on Giammarino's two-out single.
ISU loaded the bases on a single, an error and a two-out walk in the second, but Miller got Brooke Riemenschneid to hit a popup to Schrock at third.
The BG third saw leadoff hitter Wheeler hit by a pitch, and the freshman went to third on a single by Raker. But, Stober worked out of the jam, and Sims walked and stole second with one out in the bottom of the frame. She continued on to third base after a throwing error on the steal, but was forced to hold at third on a bunt by Rylee Holland, and Miller got Becky Malchow to hit a grounder to Raker at first for the third out.
Simmons singled with one out in the fourth, and a grounder sent freshman pinch-runner Makayla Wood to second. Wood, making her first appearance as a Falcon, took third on Giammarino's bunt single, but another grounder retired the side.
The Sycamores tied the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Mann led off the inning with a single, and took second on a grounder. With two outs, Shaye Barton reached on a BG error, with Mann scoring to make it a 1-1 game.
Wheeler and Raker each singled against reliever Kenzie Ihle in the fifth, and the runners moved up on a two-out wild pitch, but again, a grounder ended the threat.
Sims walked and stole second in the bottom of the fifth, but she was stranded at third when, after a grounder to the right side, Miller got Malchow to lift a fly ball to Wheeler in right.
Then, the Falcons sent 11 hitters to the plate in the sixth, taking the lead for good.
Simmons – who had two hits in the inning – led off with a single, and Blevins followed suit. For Blevins, the hit was her first as a Falcon. Giammarino's bunt single loaded the bases, and Sorgi then drew a walk to score Simmons and give BGSU the lead for good.
Parave entered the game, pinch-hitting for Wheeler, and the senior singled to plate Blevins and Giammarino, giving the Brown and Orange a 4-1 lead. Ihle retired Searle on a fly ball down the left-field line, and she also got Raker to lift a fly ball to center, with Sorgi tagging and scoring. But, Schrock doubled on the next pitch, and junior Kayla Gregory followed with a single that scored Parave.
Simmons came to the plate for the second time in the sixth, and laced a double to score Schrock with the Falcons' final run.
Miller worked a one-two-three sixth inning, and Combs pitched the seventh, allowing a run.
Miller threw 108 pitches, including 67 strikes, in the victory. Four of her teammates had at least two hits in the win, including Simmons, who was 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and a run batted in.
Giammarino was 3-of-4, scoring a run and driving in a run, while both Raker and Wheeler were 2-for-2 in the win. Raker also drew a walk and had an RBI. Blevins scored a pair of runs, while Parave drove in a pair. Sorgi walked twice, scored once and had one RBI.
Stober, the first of three ISU pitchers, allowed just one unearned run and five hits in four innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out two. Ihle gave up six runs and nine hits in two innings to suffer the loss.
The Falcons return to Ulmer Stadium on Sunday morning (March 5), facing Green Bay in a 10:00 a.m. contest. Then, after returning to Northwest Ohio for a few days, the Brown and Orange will hit the road for a Wednesday (March 8) doubleheader at Western Kentucky, followed by four games in the Ole Miss Tournament from Thursday through Saturday (March 9-11).
