East and Feely Named to 2017 Gymnastics All-MAC Teams
March 15, 2017 | Gymnastics
OFFICIAL RELEASE
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University gymnasts Jovannah East and Lauren Feely were named to the 2017 All-MAC teams as announced by the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday. East was one of three gymnasts named first team All-MAC, while Feely joins seven others on the All-MAC second team.
The All-MAC teams are determined via the final regular season Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS) in each of the individual events (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, all-around). Gymnasts with the MAC's best RQS in an event, including ties, are named first team All-MAC. The second team is comprised of gymnasts whose RQS ranks second or third in the MAC in an event, including ties.
Jovannah East, a freshman from Zion, Ill., has become the MAC's first freshman member of the All-MAC first team since Kent State's Rachel Stypinski in 2015. East owns a 9.870 RQS on the vault and is the best in the MAC on that apparatus. That mark is good for eighth in the Central region and tied for 26th nationally. In addition, she is tied for sixth in the MAC with a balance beam RQS of 9.835.
East has been the Falcons' most consistent gymnast throughout her debut season. Her career started with a 9.825 on the balance beam at Penn State. Since that debut, she has scored 9.800 or better in 23 of 27 routines across three events, including a streak of 21 straight. On vault, she has posted 9.850 or better for nine straight meets and leapt to a career-best 9.900 in the regular season finale at Eastern Michigan. Her efforts have resulted in a first place finish 12 times, eight of which have followed her 11 vault performances. She has at least one top finish in nine of her 11 meets.
"Jovannah has been such a steady performer this year," said BGSU head coach Kerrie Turner. "She jumped right into collegiate gymnastics as a freshman and has really shined on the competition floor. She is very deserving of this recognition."
This is the fourth consecutive year in which a BGSU gymnast has been named first-team All-MAC. Alyssa Nocella earned the honor for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Lauren Feely, a senior from Gurnee, Ill., is a second-team All-MAC member for the third time in her career. Her three appearances are tied for the most All-MAC honors in the last five seasons. Feely ranks second in the MAC with a 9.865 vault RQS. That score ranks tenth in the Central region and is tied for 29th nationally.
Feely has earned a 9.800 or above nine times in her 12 vaults during the 2017 season. Against Western Michigan on Feb. 5, she wowed the crowd at Anderson Arena with a leap that earned a career-best 9.925. Since then, she has twice earned a 9.900. Her performances have resulted in four first-place finishes and four other second-place finishes.
Turner said, "Lauren continues to prove hard work pays off. Despite sitting out much of the fall with an injury, she stayed mentally focused, which helped her make quick progress upon her return to training. This recognition is truly earned through her daily dedication to gymnastics."
As Feely continued to recover from her fall injury, she progressed to the point where she was able to begin defense of her 2016 MAC championship in the all-around competition. She performed in the all-around during the final four meets of the regular season and closed with a season-best 39.150, which included season-best marks on the balance beam and floor exercise.
Feely's career now includes the 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year award, two MAC championships, three All-MAC honors, and a 2016 trip to the NCAA Regionals as part of the first BGSU team to qualify for the postseason in 25 years.
Bowling Green concludes the 2017 season on Saturday, March 18 when the Falcons host the 2017 MAC Gymnastics Championships at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio. The meet, which includes all seven MAC squads, will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be televised live on BCSN and ESPN3.
