Redshirt junior earns weekly conference honor
Bowling Green State University softball standout Aspen Searle has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week. The conference office announced the weekly award winners Monday afternoon (March 13).
Searle, a native of Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), earns the honor for the first time this season and the third time in her Falcon career.
Searle, a redshirt junior, hit .480 as the Falcons won five of seven games last week. Searle had four multiple-hit games, including two three-hit contests, on the week, and led BGSU in at-bats (25), runs (8), hits (12), doubles (6), total bases (21), slugging percentage (.840) and on-base pct. (.500). She scored two runs three times on the week, and had at least one extra-base hit in five of the seven games.
A shortstop, Searle was a combined 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles in a doubleheader at Western Kentucky on Wednesday (March 8). Then, she hit .529 in BGSU's five games at the Ole Miss Classic, as the Falcons went 4-1 in that tourney. Searle went 0-for-2 with a walk against the nationally-ranked hosts, then hit .600 with a slugging pct. of 1.067 over the last four games – all wins.
She had a double and a homer against Jackson State, then was 3-for-4 with a double vs. Eastern Kentucky. Searle scored two runs and drove in one in each of those wins. She had a base hit as the Falcons topped Big 12 Conference member Oklahoma State, then was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs, a stolen base and an RBI in another win over JSU.
On the year, Searle is hitting .372 with an on-base pct. of .409 and a slugging pct. of .605. She leads the team with 32 hits and 11 doubles, and ranks second in runs (17), homers (3) and RBI (20). Searle is tied for the BG lead in total bases, with 52.
Searle was named the MAC Player of the Week in the East Division. Ohio's Savannah Jo Dorsey was named the MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week, while Central Michigan's Allison Curtis and Rachael Knapp won the West Division Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week awards, respectively.
The Falcons, now 14-12 on the season, are scheduled to play a Wednesday (March 15) game at Michigan, before heading to Bloomington, Ind., for four contests in this weekend's Hoosier Classic.
