March 01, 2017 | Gymnastics
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University gymnast Rachel Reis has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, as announced by the MAC office on Wednesday, March 1. Reis, a senior from Ponte Vedra, Fla., set a personal record last week by earning a 9.875 for her uneven parallel bars routine.
Reis competed on the uneven bars for the Falcons on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Central Michigan. Her routine sparked the BGSU lineup to a team score of 48.875 on the bars, which is the Falcons' best of the season by 0.45 points. That improvement led to a cumulative team result of 195.725, easily the team's top score of 2017 and tied for the seventh-best in school history. Reis' individual 9.875 broke her personal record of 9.850 from the 2016 season. It was her second 9.800 or better of 2017 and also earned her second event victory of the year.
Reis and her teammates captured the meet at CMU, 195.725-195.625. It was the team's first victory over CMU since 2008 and the first in Mount Pleasant, Mich. since 1987.
Reis carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average and majors in exercise science.
The Falcons continue their season with a pair of dual meets this weekend. First, BGSU hosts Kent State on Friday, March 3 in what will be Reis' final meet at Anderson Arena. The team then travels to East Lansing, Mich. on Sunday, March 5 for their final non-conference meet of the season.
