BGSU sophomore Brooke Parker went the distance as well, throwing 112 pitches – including 78 for strikes – in the first complete game of her collegiate career. Parker allowed just one earned run in the game. She worked out of trouble in several innings, and kept the Terrapins off of the scoreboard in each of the final six frames.Â
But, the Terps got the only runs they would need in the top of the first inning. Amanda Brashear, who was 3-for-5 on the afternoon, led off the game with a base hit. She took second on a groundout, third on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out single by Anna Kufta. After an infield hit put two runners aboard, Parker got Martin to hit a popup to second base for the second out. But, an error allowed another run to score and kept the inning alive for the Terps, and Jordan Aughinbaugh singled to plate a third run.
And, as it turned out, that would complete the game's scoring. BG's only hit came in the second, when senior Haley Schrock singled up the middle with one out. But, she was stranded there after a strikeout and a liner to shortstop.
Sophomores Hannah Giammarino and Alex Sorgi drew back-to-back walks with one down in the third, but Martin induced the next two batters to fly out to left.
Parker worked out of bases-loaded jams in both the third and fifth frames, getting Brashear to hit a grounder back to the circle in the third and inducing Skylyne Ellazare to hit a fielder's-choice grounder in the fifth. Neither team had a hit over the remainder of the game.
The Terps had 12 hits in the game, but Maryland left 13 runners on base, to three for the Falcons. In addition to Brashear's three hits, Kufta, Aughinbaugh and Juli Strange each had two-hit games for the Terrapins.
In the nightcap, the Falcons broke on top with a three-run third inning, before Bradley bounced back to tie the score in the bottom of the frame. BU took the lead with a pair of sixth-inning runs, then Julie Kestas retired the Falcons in the seventh to seal the win.
Freshman Kendyl Wheeler had two of the Falcons' five hits vs. the Braves, and had a run scored and one RBI as well. For Bradley, leadoff hitter Kelly Kapp was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Elizabeth Leonard was 2-of-3 in the win.
Each team had a first-inning hit, but Wheeler was erased on a fielder's choice after her single, and Kapp was caught stealing in the bottom of the frame. Junior Kayla Gregory singled in the second, but a fly ball and a groundout ended the inning.
Falcon starter Meredith Miller retired the Braves in order in the second, striking out a pair of hitters, and the BG offense got on the board.in the third. Giammarino singled, and Sorgi reached on an error, with Giammarino rounding second and taking third. Wheeler's infield hit scored Giammarino with the game's first run, and redshirt junior Aspen Searle walked to load the bases.
Then, redshirt junior Chelsea Raker drew a walk as well, enabling Sorgi to trot home. And, Wheeler, after advancing to third on the Raker walk, promptly stole home to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. That signaled the end of the day for Megan Mahaffy, and Kestas came on and got a fielder's-choice grounder and two fly-ball outs.
The Braves bounced back in the bottom of the inning. Leonard led off with a single, and after a Stephanie Campos base hit, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Kapp followed with a two-run double down the left-field line, and one out later, Caitlyn McCarron's double plated Kapp and tied the game.
In the Falcon fifth, Searle reached on an error, and after a wild pitch, Raker's infield hit put runners at the corners with one out. They moved up on a grounder, but Kestas got a fly ball to left to end the inning.
Miller allowed a single, but nothing more, in the fifth, but Kestas worked a one-two-three sixth inning, and a leadoff error opened the door for the Braves in the bottom of the sixth.
Katie Habryle reached on that BG error, and one out later, Kealia Wysocki walked to put two runners aboard. Then, Leonard singled up the mmiddle, and pinch-runner Telly Hunter came around to score. The unearned run would prove to be the winning tally, and another unearned run scored on a Campos groundout, with pinch-runner Sydney Young giving the Braves a two-run lead.
Kestas retired the Falcons in order in the top of the seventh to pick up the win. She allowed only one hit in five innings of relief, striking out three.
Miller gave up three earned runs in her complete-game effort, walking a pair of hitters and recording three strikeouts of her own.
