Falcons down St. Bonaventure in a Pair of Saturday Games in Charlotte
The Bowling Green State University softball team utilized different methods to pick up a win in Saturday's (Feb. 18) two games vs. St. Bonaventure University, but in each case, the result was the same: a win. The Falcons downed the Bonnies by scores of 8-3 and 5-4 at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
Saturday's first win completed the round-robin portion of the tournament for the Falcons, in a four-team tourney that also includes Canisius and the host school, Charlotte. BG's second win over the Bonnies came in a semifinal-round game, and puts the Falcons into Sunday's championship contest vs. the host 49ers. That game, the second of the day, is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m.
Redshirt junior Chelsea Raker led the way offensively for the Falcons on Saturday. Raker hit .714 in the two games, going 5-for-7. Raker drove in six runs on the day, including four in the nightcap. In that second game, Raker had a double in each of her first three at-bats, before the Bonnies intentionally walked her in her final plate appearance of the day.

Four Falcons – redshirt junior Aspen Searle, junior Katee Hinkle, sophomore Alex Sorgi and freshman Kendyl Wheeler – each had three hits on the day. Sorgi scored three runs and Hinkle, Wheeler and sophomore Hannah Giammarino two apiece.
In the circle, sophomore Kiley Sosby picked up the win in the opener to improve to 3-1 on the season. She allowed just four hits and one earned run in five innings of work, striking out eight batters. Classmate Brooke Parker threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief, with a pair of strikeouts.
In the second game, sophomore Meredith Miller was perfect through five innings, winding up with a three-hitter and improving to 2-0 on the year. All of the Bonnies' runs in the second game were unearned. She struck out 10 batters, issued just one walk and allowed the Bonnies to bat just .115 against her.
"I was happy to see the team come out strong today, after a disappointing start to the weekend," said BGSU head coach Sarah Willis. "The team played loose and confident today all around, which is a key to our success.
"We had great performances in the circle by both our starters and our relief pitchers. Pitching was a huge key in our success today as they all did a great job keeping hitters off balance. And, all of our hitters, one through nine, were productive in the lineup today. Their execution of the short game and situational hitting was on point. I love seeing the versatility in the lineup!"
Raker's three doubles in Saturday's second contest tied the BGSU single-game record. Former Falcons Erin Zwinck (March 12, 1999, vs. Illinois State) and Renee Rosemeier (April 28, 2002, vs. Buffalo) each had three two-base hits in a game.
In the opener, the Falcons got the leadoff runner aboard in each of the first three innings, and finally broke through against SBU starting pitcher Rylee Hehir in the third. Hinkle led off with a bunt single, and took second on a one-out hit by Wheeler. Hehir struck out the next batter, but Raker ripped an RBI single, with Hinkle scoring the first run of the morning. Senior Haley Schrock walked for the second time in as many plate appearances, and junior Laine Simmons singled to score Wheeler.
The Bonnies cut the BG lead in half in the top of the fourth. Sosby had allowed one baserunner, on a pair of walks and a single, in each of the first three innings. But, in the fourth, Alexandra Piergustavo was hit by a pitch with one out, and Desiree Gonzalez doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Sosby struck out Kelly Farrell for the second out, and the sophomore got Alissa Karjel to swing and miss for strike three as well. The pitch, though, got away for a passed ball as Karjel reached base safely and Piergustavo crossed the plate.
BG bounced back in the bottom of the inning. Giammarino led off with an infield single, took second on Hinkle's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Sorgi's base hit. Sorgi stole second before Giammarino scored on Wheeler's groundout. Then, Searle and Raker each singled, with Raker's infield hit plating Sorgi for a 4-1 lead. For the second inning in a row, the Falcons had four hits.
SBU got a run back in the fifth, as Haley Majot walked with one down, and Morgan Phillips doubled to score her with two outs. Sosby struck out each of the other three hitters that inning.
The home half of the inning saw Simmons reach on an error, and Sosby single to send pinch-runner Taylor Blevins to second. The Bonnies made a pitching change, but Giammarino reached on another error, with Blevins scoring. One out later, Sorgi's grounder scored Sosby, and Wheeler then drilled a ball to left-center for a triple that plated Giammarino. Wheeler scored on Searle's single, and the Falcons had an 8-2 lead.
The Bonnies scored a run without benefit of a hit in the sixth. A hit batter, a walk and another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs, and Parker replaced Sosby in the circle. She got Gonzalez to hit a grounder to shortstop Searle, who fired home for a force play and out number one in the inning. But, Kaitlin Caringi reached on a BG error, with Nicole Antonacci scoring. Parker then got the next two hitters to hit infield popups and end the threat. And, the BG sophomore allowed a pair of hits in the seventh, but struck out Antonacci with those two runners aboard, then got Karjel to pop up to Raker at first base to end the game.Â
BGSU outhit the Bonnies, 11-6, in Saturday's first meeting. Eight of BGSU's nine starters in the lineup had at least one hit, with the ninth hitter – Schrock – walking twice. Wheeler, Searle and Raker each had a pair of hits in the win, with Wheeler and Giammario scoring two runs each.
The second game saw Miller retire 15-straight Bona batters, as mentioned, to start the game. She struck out the side in the third and fifth innings, and allowed only one ball to be hit out of the infield during that five-inning stretch. Miller had nine strikeouts in the first five innings, getting seven of those nine victims to swing and miss for strike three.
Meanwhile, the Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the first. Sorgi led off with a single, and took second on Wheeler's grounder. With two down, Raker's first double of the game gave the Brown and Orange an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Hinkle and Sorgi singled to lead off the inning, and Searle reached on a one-out error to load the bases. Raker unloaded them with a three-run double, and with two down, Simmons singled to score Raker and give BG a 5-0 lead.
BG left the bases loaded in the fifth, after Raker doubled with one out, and Schrock singled and freshman Logan Everett walked with two down. SBU starter Josie Borysevicz got a fly ball to right to end the threat.
And, in the sixth, SBU got four unearned runs to creep within one run of the Falcons. Karjel singled to break up Miller's bid for a perfect game, and Hailey Blencowe reached on an error. A fielder's choice produced the first out of the inning, but Majot singled to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Emma Borysevicz reached on another BG error, with Blencowe and Olivia Golay scoring. A Phillips grounder resulted in a force at second, but Piergustavo's double scored a pair of runs.
The Falcons again left the bases loaded in the home half of the sixth. After the first two batters were retired, Wheeler and Searle each singled, and the Bonnies issued an intentional walk to Raker. But, after SBU made a pitching change and brought Kristen Hickling into the game, Schrock's liner was caught by the third baseman for the third out.
In the seventh, Miller struck out Karjel, got Blencowe to ground out, and induced Golay to hit a game-ending fly ball to right.
BG had 11 hits for the second-straight game, while Bona had just three. Raker had the three doubles along with four RBI, while Sorgi and Hinkle each had two hits and Sorgi scored a pair of runs.
The Falcons, as mentioned, will conclude play in the First Pitch Challenge by taking on host Charlotte in Sunday's championship game. That contest is slated to start at approximately 12:15 p.m.
