Falcons Open 2017-18 Season Friday By Hosting BG Opener

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team will host the BG Opener Friday, beginning at 5 pm, at Perry Field House to kick off the 2017-18 season. The Falcons will compete against Miami and Eastern Michigan in the meet. There will be no team scores kept and admission is free.

THE HOST WITH THE MOST
- BGSU will host three meets in Perry Field House during the indoor season.
- The Falcons will host the Tom Wright Classic on Jan. 19 before serving as the host school for the Mid-American Conference Championships Feb. 23-24.
- Bowling Green last hosted the indoor track and field MAC Championships in 2011, placing eighth with 45 team points.
THROW FOR DOUGH
- BGSU is set to enter five competitors in the weight throw (and a sixth unattached) and three in the shot put Friday.
- Redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson is the defending MAC runner-up in the weight throw and placed third in the shot put in 2017. She is the school record holder in the shot put at 53-feet-6.75 and will compete in both events Friday.
- Redshirt senior Elizabeth Iversen ranks third in school history in the weight throw at 63-feet-7.25 and was third at the MAC Championships last year. She is scheduled to compete in both throws events Friday.
JUMP AROUND
- BGSU will enter multiple competitors in all three jumping events Friday.
- Senior Kyla Paster is the team's most decorated returner in the jumps, placing ninth in the triple jump at the MAC Championships last year, following an eighth place finish in 2016 and a ninth place finish in 2015.
- BeJai Fray finished 11th at the MAC Championships in the long jump a year ago and will compete in that event, as well as the high jump, Friday.
ON THE TRACK
- Track events will focus on sprints and mid-distance Friday with the longest race being the 800.
- Senior Dorresha Green ranks second in school history in the 60 and she has the top entry time heading into that event Friday.
- Northern Kentucky transfer Peyton Lee was third in the 60 hurdles at the Horizon League Championships a year ago. Her time of 8.78 seconds in the event at NKU would rank among the top five in BGSU history.
- Sophomore Mis'cha Sellers won the 200 at this meet a year ago and is the lone Falcon entered in the event Friday.
- Senior Cortisha Short is the defending BG Opener champion in the 300 and will run that event again Friday, along with a host of BGSU freshmen.
- Sophomore Brianna Tidmore, who earned experience racing at the MAC Championships in relays a year ago, will be BGSU's featured returning runner in the 600 Friday.
- Sophomores Rachel Stute and Paige Geatz will compete in the 800. Stute had a PR time of 2:24.38 a year ago and Geatz ran 2:32.88.
IT TAKES TEAMWORK
- The 1600 relay will be the only relay race competed on Friday.
- The Falcons have a young team entered with sophomores Chasatea Brown, Brianna Tidmore and Paige Geatz, along with freshman Hailey Mayes.
- Tidmore and Brown ran on BGSU's 1600 relay team at the MAC Championships last year. Tidmore was also a member of the 1600 relay team that won the BG Opener a year ago.
FALCONS SIGN FIVE
- The BGSU cross country and track & field program announced the signing of five high school student-athletes during the early signing 2017-18 early signing period.
- The Falcons are excited to welcome Jazzlyn Gaiters (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington HS), Iyanna Ross (Columbus, Ohio / Pickerington Central HS), Katie Seyfang (Washington Court House, Ohio / Miami Trace HS), Olivia Clymer (White Lake Township, Mich. / White Lake Lakeland HS) and Katerina Shuble (La Porte, Ind. / La Porte HS) to the family.
- Gaiters and Ross are sprinters, while Seyfang is a thrower. Clymer is a distance runner who will also compete in cross country and Shuble competes in mid-distance events and will take part in cross country.

ALL-ACADEMIC
- BGSU's track and field team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 2016-17 season, posting a 3.43 combined grade point average.
- Current team members Aliyah Gustafson and Rachel Walny, along with graduate Makenzie Wheat, were named USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic award winners.
