Sophomore striker, senior center back earn second-team honors
A pair of Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have been honored by the Mid-American Conference. Chris Brennan and Alexis Souahy have been named to the All-MAC Second Team.
The all-conference team, along with the specialty award winners, was announced on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 9) by the league office.
Both Brennan, a sophomore, and Souahy, a senior, earn All-MAC honors for the first time in their respective BGSU careers.
Brennan, a native of Copley, Ohio (Copley), led the Falcons in scoring, with 14 points on the year. He paced the Falcons with five goals, and was second on the club in assists. Brennan also led the Falcons in shot attempts (36) and shots on goal (22). Brennan played in 16 of BGSU's 17 matches, starting all 16. He had a goal and an assist in the team's season opener, vs. IUPUI, and was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week on Aug. 29 for his efforts in that win. He also scored goals vs. then-No. 1 Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Northern Illinois and Western Illinois. Brennan's four assists included two in BG's road win over Drexel, and he had an assist on the winning goal just two nights later, as the Falcons downed Penn. After two years with the Falcons, Brennan has 10 goals and 26 points in 35 career matches.
Souahy, who hails from Saint Etienne au Mont, France (Saint Joseph), finished fourth on the Falcons in scoring in his senior season. His eight points included three goals, tying him for third on the squad in that category, along with two assists. Souahy, a 2017 team captain, scored goals in back-to-back matches, road shutout wins over Drexel and Penn, and he also found the back of the net against NIU, scoring what proved to be the winning goal on Senior Night at Cochrane Stadium. He was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after the team's two wins in Philadelphia. Souahy guided the Falcons' defense to seven shutouts in 2017 and 18 in his three years with the program. In those three years, Souahy started all 55 of BG's matches and totaled 17 points on six goals and five assists. In fact, he played every second of every match this season, and was on the pitch for all but 29 seconds of his three-year BGSU career. The only time he went to the bench was when he was subbed out in the final minute of a 3-0 win during his junior year.
The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols finished the season with an overall record of 7-9-1, and BGSUÂ went 1-3-1 in MAC play. Five of the team's losses came by one goal on the road to nationally-ranked opponents. Nichols and his staff, assistant coaches Eric Reed and Zach Mason, had seven seniors on the 2017 club.
