November 09, 2017 | Football
Little Rock, Ark. – Bowling Green State University special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Matt Brock has been named a nominee for 2017 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches. In total, 56 assistant coaches earned nominations from the approximately 1,500 assistant coaches in FBS Football.
Brock has done a tremendous job with Bowling Green's special teams units, allowing kicker Jake Suder and punter Joseph Davidson to thrive individually, while guiding coverage and return units that rank among the best in the country.
Suder has made 16-of-18 field goals and ranks among the top 10 in the country in field goal percentage. He is a perfect 14-of-14 from inside of 40 yards. Davidson is one of the top punters in the country and the Falcons rank sixth in the country in net punting average behind his performances.
In two years under Brock, Bowling Green has not had a kick or punt blocked. His kick return coverage unit is eighth in the nation, allowing just 16.3 yards per return. The punt coverage unit is allowing just 3.3 yards per return, among the top 20 in the country as well.
As the linebackers coach, Brock's unit has been active in 2017. Brandon Harris is tied for second in the country with three fumble recoveries and the Falcons have recovered a nation's-best 15 fumbles on the year. The linebackers have been responsible for four forced fumbles and four recoveries as a group. Nate Locke is second on the team with 71 tackles and has a team-best 8.0 tackles for loss. He earned a MAC East Defensive Player of the Week award. Harris has 70 tackles and Armani Posey has added 52.
