Gymnastics Signs Tess Muir to NLI for 2019 Season
November 08, 2017 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team and head coach Kerrie Turner have announced the signing of Tess Muir to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019 season. The current Falcon roster is composed of 24 student-athletes, only three of which are seniors. Muir is slated to join the 21 prospective returnees on campus for the 2018 fall semester.
Muir hails from Woodland Park, N.J. and is the daughter of Jim and Edwina Muir. She is a student at Passaic Valley High School, where she ranks in the top five percent of her class academically. She is a Level 10 gymnast at the Eastern National Academy of Gymnastics in Paramus, N.J., and she trains under Craig Zappa, Jennifer Zappa and John Wojtczuk.
"Tess Muir is an exceptional student-athlete, and I am thrilled she will be joining our program. Tess has consistently competed at the highest Junior Olympic level, and her experience at nationals will lend itself well to competing collegiately," said Turner. "Power really defines Tess with dynamic floor and beam tumbling, as well as a solid vault. In addition, Tess is an outstanding student, and I expect she will transition well to her role as both student and athlete. She immediately clicked with our team and the coaching staff, and she is a very welcome addition to our Falcon family."
Muir has excelled as a Level 10 gymnast for the last four years. In 2014, she finished second in the all-around and third on the beam and floor at the state level, then placed fourth in the vault at regionals before earning sixth place in the vault at the Junior Olympic NIT. Muir's regional performance improved in 2015, when she placed seventh in the all-around and third on the vault and beam. She qualified for the Junior Olympics Nationals, and she earned a top-ten finish on the balance beam.
Muir continued to perform at a high level for the last two seasons. She rose to second on beam, third on vault, and fourth in the all-around at the 2016 Level 10 Regionals. At the Junior Olympics Nationals, she improved from 23rd in the all-around in 2015 to 13th in 2016. She added a fifth-place finish on beam and seventh on vault. Most recently, Muir took second place on balance beam again at the 2017 Level 10 Regionals and earned 18th in the all-around and eighth on vault at the 2017 Junior Olympic Nationals.
Bowling Green begins their quest for a Mid-American Conference championship and an NCAA postseason berth on Friday, Jan. 5 when the team travels to East Lansing, Mich. for a dual meet against Michigan State. The Falcons make their season debut at Anderson Arena on Saturday, Jan. 13 against Utah State. Last season, BGSU claimed their best finish at the MAC Championships in 30 years and their second-best team score in school history when it placed second with a 196.400 cumulative mark. The team also sent a pair of athletes to compete in the NCAA Regional at the University of Illinois.
