Falcons Set for Zippy Invitational This Weekend
November 30, 2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team returns to action this weekend at the 2017 Zippy Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The meet will take place across three days from Dec. 1-3, 2017 at the Ocasek Natatorium. The Falcons will be one of nine women's teams at the event. The list of participating teams includes Akron, Buffalo and Toledo from the Mid-American Conference, as well as Bloomsburg, Clarion, Niagara, Oakland, and St. Bonaventure.
Bowling Green last competed at the Zippy Invitational during the 2015-16 season. The team finished third among eight teams with 1,658 points, just five points behind second-place Oakland. Among current BGSU athletes who competed in that event, Natalie Criswell won the 1650 freestyle race in 17:01.92, while Elodie Schreiber placed fourth in the 200 backstroke. Emily Verbrugge was a second-place finisher in the 400 individual medley. Falcon swimmers took first place in the 500 freestyle race and had numerous other second- and third-place results, including second in the 400 medley relay and third in the 800 medley relay.
BGSU swimming and diving head coach Matt Ense said, "As a team, we are really excited to see where we are at the mid-season point. The team has been working extremely hard in the pool and on the boards, and it is very exciting when you head to a a facility where the MAC Championships will be held next year and get to face three other MAC schools, along with some strong other schools. This meet will allow us to see where we are and what we still need to work on as we come down the home stretch of the season. It will be exciting to see who stands out this weekend and see who likes to compete in big time situations!."
Akron has won the previous three Zippy Invitationals and is the four-time defending MAC champions. The Zips are 3-2 in dual meets, including a win over Miami and a loss to Eastern Michigan, and they most recently won the 15-team Magnus Cup meet.
The Falcons are 3-3 this year in dual meet action and have defeated St. Francis, Xavier, and Tiffin. Most recently, the team dropped a dual meet at Michigan State 186-114; however, sophomore diver Talisa Lemke was named the MAC Swimmer/Diver of the Week after capturing the title in both diving events and establishing new school records in each.
If you would like to attend the meet in Akron, it is a ticketed event. Tickets for each individual prelim session are $6, while tickets to the final sessions are $8 each. Spectators may also purchase a $35 pass, good for entry to each session throughout the weekend. Tickets must be paid for in cash and will be available 90 minutes prior to the start of each session. Heat sheets will also be for sale for $2.Â
Results and a daily recap will be posted to BGSUFalcons.com following the evening session on each day of the meet.
