Pugliese earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second consecutive year, while each of the other five Falcons was named to the team for the first time.
Brennan, a native of Copley, Ohio (Copley H.S.), has a 3.333 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration major at BGSU. The sophomore was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2017. Brennan played in 16 of BGSU's 17 matches, starting all 16, and led the team in scoring, with five goals and 14 points. He finished second on the Falcons in assists, with four. Brennan was involved in the scoring of both goals in BGSU's regular-season opener, a 2-0 win over IUPUI, with a goal and an assist. He had his first career two-assist match in a win at Drexel, and had an assist on the winning goal two nights later at Penn. He scored the clinching goal in BG's next match, a win over Western Illinois, and scored in back-to-back matches vs. Cincinnati and then-No. 1 Notre Dame. He scored the final goal of BG's 3-1 win over Northern Illinois at Cochrane Stadium. After just two years and 35 career matches at BG, Brennan has 26 points, including 10 goals.
Maciejewski, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Summit Country Day), has a 3.240 cumulative GPA as a business administration major. He played in 12 matches, making six starts, and had three points on a goal and an assist. Maciejewski recorded his first collegiate point in the Falcons' double-OT win over Duquesne. He played six minutes in the first half, then played the final nine-plus minutes of regulation and every second of the OT periods vs. the Dukes. Maciejewski had the primary assist on the winner, as his cross was headed home in the 102nd minute. He scored his first collegiate goal on the road against nationally-ranked Akron, with under two minutes left in regulation and the Falcons playing two men down. Maciejewski did not play in BG's first four matches, then played in all but one of the final 13 contests, including each of the last eight. He started the last six games, including four of the five MAC matches.Â
Mwembia, a native of Toulouse, France, has a 3.315 cumulative GPA, majoring in insurance. He was ranked 10th among MAC players on the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Conference Top-20 list, and earned MAC Player of the Week (Sept. 5) and TDS Team of the Week (Oct. 3) honors in 2017. Mwembia played every second of every match, recording 64 saves, a goals-against average of 1.04 and seven shutouts. He also had a saves percentage of .780. Mwembia tied a school record with five consecutive shutouts to begin the year, making six saves against both Cleveland State and Drexel during that stretch. In BG's sixth game of the season, he finally allowed a goal, on a second-half penalty kick in a 1-0 loss vs. No. 6 Michigan State. That snapped his shutout streak at 502:49. The first goal he allowed from the run of play did not come until the seventh match of the year, vs. UC. He made four saves and had the first assist of his career on the road at No. 1 Notre Dame, and also had four stops at No. 25 Ohio State. In that OSU game, for the second time in as many road matches against a Big Ten opponent, Mwembia allowed just one goal, and that goal came on a PK ... He made five saves against Duquesne in a double-OT shutout victory, and had two more stops as BGSU battled West Virginia to a 0-0, double-OT draw. Mwembia tied his career high with eight saves, including several spectacular stops, in the Falcons' OT match at No. 19 Akron. Through two seasons with the Falcons, he has 15 career shutouts in 35 matches.
Pugliese, a native of Cambridge, Ontario (Jacob Hespeler Secondary), has a 3.600 GPA as an accounting major. He played in 16 of BGSU's 17 matches in 2017, making 15 starts. Pugliese had three points, all on assists, and helped the Falcon defense to seven shutouts. He played all 90 minutes of the Falcons' 2-0 win over IUPUI in the season opener, then had an assist in BG's win at Drexel. Pugliese played all 90 minutes in the matches vs. Cincinnati, No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 25 Ohio State. He also played the entire match vs. SIUE, Wright State and Akron, and played 96 minutes vs. West Virginia, helping the Falcons to a shutout. Pugliese recorded the first multiple-assist match of his career in BG's 3-1 win over Northern Illinois, as he had the primary assist on the tying goal, and also assisted on the eventual winner. Pugliese was on the pitch for all but 34 minutes of BGSU's five conference matches.
Souahy, a native of Saint Etienne au Mont, France (Saint Joseph), has a 3.208 cumulative GPA as an International Business major. A team captain, he was named to the All-MAC Second Team, and also was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Sept. 5. Souahy played every minute of every match in 2017, and finished fourth on the team in scoring, with eight points. The center back tied for third on the team with three goals, and also had a pair of assists. He helped the Falcons to seven shutouts, including a school record-tying five in a row. Souahy had an assist on the game-winning goal in the season opener vs. IUPUI, and scored the final goal of BGSU's 3-0 win at Drexel. Two nights later, he again scored the final goal as BG won at Penn. The senior had an assist on the tying goal at nationally-ranked Akron, as BG scored while playing two men down with under two minutes remaining in regulation. Then, he scored the GWG in the final home contest of his BGSU career, a win over Northern Illinois on Senior Night. Souahy had 17 points on six goals and five assists in his BG career, and helped the Falcons' defense to 18 shutouts in that time. He started all 55 of BG's matches during his three-year career, and was on the field for all but 29 seconds during those three seasons.
Wrobel, a native of Mississauga, Ontario (St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic), is a health science major at BGSU, with a cumulative GPA of 3.548. He played in 14 matches, making 13 starts, in 2017. An outside back, he helped the BGSU defense to seven shutouts, including a school record-tying five in a row. Wrobel played all but 14 minutes of those five matches, then played all 90 minutes of BGSU's matches vs. No. 6 Michigan State and No. 1 Notre Dame, and he also played 81 minutes at No. 25 Ohio State. Wrobel was also on the field for every second of BGSU's double-OT shutout win over Duquesne. He played at least 76 minutes in each of the Falcons' seven wins on the season.
The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon all student-athletes who maintain a 3.20 GPA and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the conference's faculty athletic representatives select the 'best of the best' who will earn the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award, which will be announced in the coming months. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes for each sport is equivalent to the number of first-team selections of 33% of nominees, whichever is greater.
