Five tournaments, 11 home dates highlight challenging spring slate
Bowling Green State University softball coach Sarah Willis has announced her team's schedule for the 2018 season. The Falcons' spring slate features five tournaments as well as 11 home dates at Meserve Field.
BGSU Softball 2018 Schedule
For the fifth consecutive season, the Falcons will begin the year in Cleveland, at the CSU Dome Invitational (Feb. 9-11). BGSU is scheduled to play five games inside the dome, with two games vs. Niagara and one apiece against Canisius, Robert Morris and the host school, Cleveland State. The Falcons' official season opener is scheduled for Friday afternoon, Feb. 9, at 4:30 p.m. vs. NU.
BGSU then participates in tournaments hosted by Elon (Feb. 16-18) and Texas Tech (March 2-4), remaining in the Lone Star State after the latter tourney for a doubleheader at Abilene Christian. The Elon tourney includes games against North Texas, Rhode Island, St. Mary's and the host Phoenix, while BGSU will meet Texas Tech and UTSA twice each in the TTU tourney, taking on New Mexico as well.
Following the Abilene Christian twinbill on March 6, the Orange and Brown will head to Memphis for a three-day tourney (March 9-11) that includes games vs. the host Tigers, Indiana State, Mississippi Valley State, Tennessee State and Butler.
The next weekend, BGSUÂ meets both IUPUI and Lipscomb twice apiece in the latter school's tourney (March 17-18), before heading back north.
Following a March 21 DH at Wright State, the Falcons begin both the home and the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule by facing Ball State. The teams will play a single game on Friday, March 23. That contest begins a five-date, seven-game homestand. BG will play a three-game series vs. both the Cardinals (March 23-24) and Western Michigan (March 30-31), sandwiched around a midweek date vs. Fort Wayne (March 28).
April begins with a midweek doubleheader at Miami (April 3) and a three-game series at arch-rival Toledo (April 6-7). After a quick trip home to close the Miami series (April 11), BGSU heads back out on the road for the next few weeks. A seven-game swing sees the Brown and Orange take on Buffalo (April 13-14) and Akron (April 20-21) in a pair of three-game, intradivisional series, before the Falcons step outside MAC play for an early-evening game at Notre Dame on April 24.
BG returns to Meserve Field to face Kent State on April 27-28, and the final non-conference contests of 2018 come on May 1, when Detroit Mercy ventures to BG for a noon doubleheader.
The regular season concludes with a three-game set against Ohio at Meserve Field on May 4-5.
The 2017 MAC Championships are scheduled for May 9-12 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, with the tournament winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Falcons went 6-2 during the team's fall schedule, and the Brown and Orange outscored opponents, 62-14, in the eight games.
Willis and her staff, assistant coaches Katie Reiff and Lauren Gambone, welcome back 11 letterwinners from last year's club, and also have added 11 newcomers, including eight freshmen and a trio of transfers.
The list of returnees includes five positional starters from a year ago. Three of the team's four pitchers from 2017 also return, and that trio combined to throw nearly 94 percent of the team's innings last spring. In all, nine of the 11 returnees started at least 22 games a year ago.
