November 17, 2017 | Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After leading the Bowling Green volleyball program to its first Mid-American Conference Regular Season title since 1992, head coach Danijela Tomic has been honored as 2017 MAC Volleyball Coach of the Year.
In her sixth season at the helm of the program, Tomic and the Falcons earned a 13-3 record in league play, with which they received the No. 2 seed and double-bye into tomorrow's MAC Tournament Semifinals where they will face the winner of No. 3 Ball State and No. 6 Western Michigan.
On its way to gaining an overall record of 17-10 in the 2017 campaign, the Falcons marked numerous notable wins and awards, including its first win over Miami since 2013, first win at Ohio since 2001, as well as its first win at Western Michigan since 1995. Individually, Tomic's team also received six different All-MAC honors by four different players as well as nine of the season's 12 MAC Defensive Player of the Week awards.
It is Coach Tomic's first MAC Coach of the Year honor, while she has built an overall record of 88-90 over the last six seasons in addition to a 53-43 MAC record in her time at Bowling Green. Overcoming several odds, the Falcons were voted by league coaches to finish fifth overall in the East Division in the 2017 MAC preseason poll.
In her first year with the Bowling Green program, Tomic led the Falcons to the 2012 MAC Tournament title and the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win. In the last two seasons, Tomic has also developed a Bowling Green program that has earned every MAC individual postseason award including 2017 MAC Player of the Year (Kallie Seimet), 2016 MAC Freshman of the Year (Isabelle Marciniak), 2016 MAC Setter of the Year (Isabelle Marciniak), and back-to-back MAC Defensive Player of the Years (2016 – Madeline Garda, 2017 – Kallie Seimet).
Prior to her arrival at Bowling Green, Tomic was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year (2006, 2008, 2009) at Florida International. In seven years as head coach at FIU, she had a record of 158-61.
It is the fifth time in school history that a BGSU volleyball coach has been named Coach of the Year, following Denise Van De Walle in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1992.
The Bowling Green volleyball program will now travel to Oxford, Ohio to compete in the 2017 MAC Tournament. The Falcons will face the winner of No. 3 Ball State and No. 6 Western Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.
