BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team lost to Ohio University, 96-72, Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Stroh Center. The loss for Bowling Green snaps its four-game winning streak over the Bobcats. A crowd of 2,372 witnessed the game on Nate Thurmond Bobblehead Day.
The loss drops Bowling Green to 8-13, and 2-6 in Mid-American Conference play. With the win, Ohio improves to 13-6 (5-3 MAC).
Dylan Frye scored a career-high 24 points, and also added a career-high six rebounds. Frye went 9-for-17 from the field. Frye nailed three triples. He went on a 10-0 run by himself to close out the second half, but Ohio chucked in a triple in the dying moments of the half to take a 44-33 lead into the break.
Ohio's three-point shooting was too much to overcome. The Bobcats went 9-for-16 from downtown in the first half, and finished the game a ridiculous 18-for-35 (51.4 percent). Ohio shot 53.5 percent (38-of-71) for the game, and made 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) free throw attempts.
Bowling Green shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field, and 20.6 percent (7-of-34) from deep. The Falcons did score 21 points at the line, as BGSU went 21-for-31 (67.7 percent).
A shorthanded BG team called on a pair of Falcon football players for the game – tight end Hunter Folkertsma and wide receiver Teo Redding. The pair combined to go 3-for-4 from the field.
Folkertsma, who also registered a rebound and assist, went 1-for-1 from the floor, and 4-for-4 at the line. He scored a layup after rolling to the rim. Redding hit a three-pointer and a scored a transition layup to finish with five points on 2-of-3 shooting.
Along with Frye, fellow freshman Rodrick Caldwell also scored in double figures, as he finished with 13 points. He also had four rebounds and one steal.
Malik Hluchoweckyj, who earned his first-career start, had a career day for the Falcons. Hluchoweckyj set career highs in points (9), rebounds (9), three-pointers (2) blocks (1) and minutes (29). Hluchoweckyj also recorded his first assist of the 2016-17 season. He went 3-for-6 from the field, and 2-for-5 from downtown.
Demajeo Wiggins saw his stretch of a double-double in three-consecutive games come to an end, but the sophomore did pitch in with seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Wiggins averaged 17.0 rebounds and 9.0 points this week.
Senior Wes Alcegaire had five rebounds, four points and three assists. Freshman Ethan Good played a career-high 11 minutes, and scored his first-career field goal – a difficult reverse layup. Good went 1-for-2 from the field, and also recorded his first-collegiate rebound.
Bowling Green will finish its three-game home stand next week. The Falcons host Miami on Jan. 31. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip. The Orange and Brown will then stage a Battle of I-75 showdown with Toledo on Feb. 4, with the action starting at 4 p.m.Â
