Falcons Lose To Eastern Michigan Tuesday Night

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team saw its six-game home winning streak come to an end on Tuesday (Jan. 10) night at the Stroh Center, as Eastern Michigan University defeated Bowling Green by a score of 81-53. Eastern Michigan shot 58.2 percent (32-of-55) for the game, and outscored BGSU by a 45-24 margin in the second half.
The loss drops Bowling Green's record to 7-9 on the season. The Falcons are now 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play. Eastern Michigan improved to 10-6 (2-1 MAC) with the victory.
The Falcons trailed by a score of 32-19 with just 3:02 left in the opening half, but junior Matt Fox hit consecutive triples, and senior Zack Denny and freshman Rodrick Caldwell made two free throws each. EMU did score with three seconds left, but the Falcons went into the locker room down just seven points at 36-29.
However, Eastern Michigan started the second half with a 10-0 run to pull ahead by a score of 46-29. Bowling Green was never able to get the game inside of 10 points for the remainder of the contest.
Caldwell and fellow freshman Dylan Frye combined to score BG's next 11 points, sparking an 11-4 run for BGSU that trimmed the EMU lead to 12 points at 52-40, but Eastern Michigan countered by scoring the next six points. Bowling Green trailed by at least 14 points for the rest of the ballgame.
Along with shooting 58.2 percent for the game, Eastern Michigan shot nearly 10 percent above its season average from downtown, as the Eagles connected on 5-of-12 attempts to finish the game with a percentage of 41.7. The Eagles scored 50 points in the paint and scored 24 points off 18 Falcon turnovers. EMU also outscored BGSU on the fast break, 17-0.
Bowling Green hauled down 17 offensive rebounds, but only scored five second-chance points. The Falcons shot 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from three-point range, and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) at the line.
Denny led the Falcons with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. He also moved into 10th place all-time in the program's three-point field goals list. The senior went 2-for-3 from deep, and has now made 124 three-point field goals in his career.
Sophomore Demajeo Wiggins finished the game 4-for-7 from the floor, and registered 11 points and seven rebounds. Frye had eight points, while Caldwell finished with seven on 2-of-4 shooting. Fox's two threes allowed him to end the game with six points. Senior Wes Alcegaire scored five points for the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green will conclude the week by hosting Northern Illinois on Saturday (Jan. 14). The game, which will be played at the Stroh Center, is slated for a 12 p.m. tip. The Falcons will then travel up the road to take on Toledo at Savage Arena in a Battle of I-75 showdown.
