Buffalo standout joins Willis & the Falcons
Bowling Green State University softball head coach Sarah Willis has announced the addition of Lauren Gambone to her staff. Gambone has already begun her duties with the Falcons.
Even before joining the Falcons, Gambone was certainly no stranger to the state of Ohio or the Mid-American Conference. A native of Canton, Ohio, she came to BGSU after wrapping up a successful collegiate playing career at the University at Buffalo.
"I would like to thank Coach Willis and the athletic department for the opportunity to become a part of the Bowling Green softball staff," said Gambone. "I believe that the sky is the limit with this group of girls, and I am extremely excited to work with the team toward the goal of bringing a MAC Championship back to BG."
A catcher/infielder, Gambone played in 52 of the Bulls' 54 games in 2016, making 49 starts. She was fourth on the team in runs batted in last season, with 20, and tied for fourth with four home runs. Two of those homers came in a game against Arkansas, part of a day which saw her collect three extra-base hits, draw two walks, score three runs and drive in six. Gambone had a total of seven multi-hit games last season.
As a junior in 2015, Gambone played in 47 games, making 44 starts, and hit .261 on the year. She tied for the team lead with seven homers, including three in conference play.
"I am excited to add Coach Gambone to our coaching staff," said Willis. "Her experience as a catcher and infielder in the MAC will provide our student-athletes a wealth of knowledge to grow from. She has amazing energy and a competitive attitude that will help to continue the positive strides this program is making."
Prior to heading to Buffalo, Gambone played her first two seasons at Lamar University. She had six homers and 16 RBI as a sophomore there, and was named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in both seasons.
Gambone was a four-year standout at Canton Central Catholic H.S., leading the Crusaders to their first-ever district championship in her senior season. She hit .540 that spring, with five homers and a school-record 45 RBI. Gambone, who earned All-Stark County First-Team honors in all four seasons, was named to the All-District First Team and the All-Ohio Second Team in her senior year. She graduated as the school's career leader in RBI, with 130.
Gambone earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from UB in 2016.
