BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Already picked as a favorite in both the WCHA Coaches' and Media Preseason Polls, the Bowling Green hockey program has been ranked No. 14 in the USCHO NCAA Men's Division I preseason rankings.
After finishing the 2015-16 campaign with a 22-14-6 overall record, the Falcons return 10 of its top-11 scorers for the 2016-17 season, in addition to All-WCHA goaltender Chris Nell.
Bowling Green is one of four WCHA teams that are ranked in the Top 20, joining Michigan Tech at No. 17, Minnesota State at No. 19, and Ferris State at No. 20. Ohio State, Miami and RIT, three teams that BGSU faces this year, also received votes in the poll.
Defending National Champion North Dakota was a clear favorite, picking up 43 of the 50 first-place votes available to earn the top ranking. Quinnipiac was No. 2, followed by Denver, Boston University and Boston College.
The USCHO.com Poll consists of 50 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
The Bowling Green men's hockey team will open the 2016-17 season on Saturday, Oct. 1 as it welcomes Windsor to the BGSU Ice Arena for exhibition play, scheduled for a 12 p.m. puck drop. The official start to the season will be Oct. 7 and Oct. 8, when the Falcons hit the road to face WCHA foe Bemidji State.
