Freshmen accounted for all of the scoring in Tuesday night's contest. UD's Rok Taneski gave the visitors the lead midway through the second half, scoring after a long individual run. But, Brennan notched the equalizer less than six minutes later, off of an assist from fellow first-year Falcon Robert Miller III.
A pair of freshmen were in goal as well. UD 'keeper Federico Barrios made four saves on the night, while BGSU's Anthony Mwembia had one save, but thwarted numerous Dayton crosses and serves into the box.
One of the best scoring chances of the game came almost immediately. With only a minute and a half gone, a diagonal ball by UD's Michael Frasca found Taneski on the far side of the penalty area. Taneski, who had a match-high eight shot attempts on the night, hit a volley that rang off the crossbar.
Senior Joe Sullivan had the Falcons' first shot attempt of the match, coming after a combination play between juniors Alexis Souahy and Brad Macomber. Souahy's pass found Sullivan swooping in on the left side of the box, but Barrios was able to make the stop on Sullivan's effort.
After Sullivan's shot, neither team had a shot attempt for over 12 minutes, before Kennedy Nwabia sent a ball wide left for the visitors. Then, 10 more minutes passed before the next shot. That shot, however, very nearly put the Falcons on top.
Prior to that next shot, however, fifth-year senior Max Auden made his 2016 debut. Auden, who was injured late last winter as the Falcons began preparing for the spring season, checked into the match in the 20th minute. He would play 64 minutes on the night, and would find himself in the middle of the action almost immediately.
Midway through the period, or about three minutes after Auden entered the match, redshirt sophomore Bismark Agyeman stole a Dayton pass and played a ball toward Auden in the penalty area. Agyeman and Auden couldn't quite connect on the pass, however, and UD cleared the ball out of the box as Auden was knocked to the ground.
In the 27th minute, the Falcons were able to string several passes forward, with sophomore Vincent Giannini, Souahy and Auden involved in the buildup. A pass toward the end line nearly went too far, but soph Tate Robertson made a nifty sliding effort to save the ball near the corner flag. Robertson scrambled to his feet, cut back to elude a defender and fired a cross toward the six-yard box.
The ball was deflected out to Agyeman, who was stationed just outside the box. He played a pass through several defenders as they moved forward, and the pass found a wide-open Sullivan. The senior, from approximately 12 yards out, whirled and fired a shot that beat Barrios, but rang off the crossbar. The rebound went toward senior Pat Flynn, who attempted a bicycle kick, but his shot went wide right.
With just over six minutes left in the half, Auden took a pass from Robertson and hit a hard shot that was blocked by a defender approximately 18 yards and three inches away from the UD goal. Auden's shot, however, was blocked by the defender's hand, and BG was awarded a free kick just outside the box. Miller's kick, however, was also blocked by the defense, as was a rebound try. The teams went to the half still locked in a scoreless draw.
The teams combined for nine shot attempts in the first half, but 16 in the second. After the Flyers took the first two shots of the second half in the opening moments, the Falcons began to apply pressure. With six minutes gone, Robertson and Sullivan just missed connecting on a through ball. Then, less than a minute later, senior Jacob Roth's long ball found Agyeman on the left side. Agyeman cut back, headed into the box from left to right and fired a hard shot. But, the ball curved directly to Barrios.
Just over 26 minutes remained when freshman Tom Wrobel took control of the ball and began a BG possession. Brennan, Robertson and Agyeman were all involved in the ensuing sequence, and Agyeman's left-side cross was deflected directly to Brennan. He fired a blast, but the shot was high.
Midway through the period, Taneski picked up a loose ball just on the BG side of midfield, in front of the grandstand. The UD freshman made a long run, heading toward the penalty area and cutting to his left. Taneski uncorked a shot that curved past Mwembia and inside the left goalpost and, in the 67th minute, the visitors had the lead.
But, less than six minutes later, Brennan and the Falcons found the equalizer. The Falcons won a throw-in on the right side, and Miller's long throw sailed toward the box. The ball was deflected by a defender, but it went fo Brennan, who made no mistake. The freshman hit a hard shot that found the lower left corner of the net.
For Brennan, the goal was his team-leading fourth of the season. Miller picked up the lone assist, his fourth of the year. Miller is tied for the BG assists lead.
With under 13 minutes to go, another BG foray into the Dayton end saw the ball wind up at the feet of Auden. The tri-captain hit a hard volley that seemed ticketed to go on frame, but was blocked out of play by a UD defender at the last moment. Then, with under eight minutes left, a give-and-go between Brennan and Flynn resulted in another blast by Brennan, but the ball went wide of the goal.
Taneski saw a shot blocked with just over two minutes left in regulation, and the rebound came back to the Flyer freshman, but his follow-up shot sailed well over the crossbar.
The visitors had six shot attempts in the first overtime period, but only one was on goal, and Mwembia made the stop on that play. Just prior to that shot on goal, the Falcons had had a chance at the other end. Agyeman slid a pass to Flynn, who returned the favor. With Agyeman working against the UD defense on the left side of the box, however, the Flyers were able to poke the ball away just before the redshirt soph could play a crossing ball.
On the ensuing counterattack, Nwabia's shot was hit directly at Mwembia. Over the final five minutes of the period, the visitors saw two shots blocked and three go wide or high.
In the second overtime, an Agyeman cross was just over the head of Flynn with two minutes gone. Thirty seconds later, Taneski looked to slide a pass ahead to Bennett Lehner in the box, but Mwembia came off of his line to slide and reach the ball first, taking it off the boots of Lehner.
Then, only 20 seconds later, an absolute blast by Flynn was somehow saved by Barrios. The BG senior hit a volley, and got all of the ball, but the UD freshman somehow kept the shot out of the net.
Midway through the period, a giveaway by the Falcons almost proved to be costly. A steal by Dayton resulted in what was setting up to be a two-on-one or even a two-on-none. Mwembia came way off of his line to attempt to break up the play, but a Flyer poked the ball past him toward a UD teammate. With the visitors looking to capitalize on the open goal and several Falcon defenders scrambling to get back into play, however, offside was called on the play as the second UD player looked to play a return pass.
WIth time ticking away, a foul on the Flyers gave BG the ball just shy of midfield. Roth played a long ball toward the box, and the ball bounced on the grass and forced Barrios to make a leaping grab as the clock went under 10 seconds. Those 10 seconds expired without further incident, and the teams had a draw.
On the night, BGSU had an 18-15 advantage in total shots and a 5-2 margin in shots on goal. BG also had a 5-2 lead in the corner-kick department.
Brennan had a BG-high four shot attempts on the night, while no fewer than six of his teammates fired two shots apiece. Taneski and Nwabia combined for 12 of the Flyers' 15 shots, with Just one of Taneski's eight shots was on goal.
The Falcons are home again on Saturday night (Sept. 24), taking on Ohio State. Starting time is set for shortly after 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
