A weekend of activities for all Bowling Green family, friends and alumni has been planned to celebrate 50 years of competition in the BGSU Ice Arena, held from Feb. 10-12, 2017. The weekend's activities will be centered around the BGSU hockey game versus Mercyhurst on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, along with other various events that will include Bowling Green high school hockey, figure skating, curling and meet and greets.
"This is a celebration for the entire Bowling Green community," BGSU Athletics Director Bob Moosbrugger said. "For 50 years, our town has benefited from the Ice Arena through great hockey, ice skating and curling. We are thankful for the community's support of both BGSU Hockey and the Ice Arena throughout the years."
Over the past 50 years, the Ice Arena has been home to six high school hockey state championship squads, one NCAA Division I hockey title team, one Olympic figure skating gold medalist, a mixed curling national championship team, and many other prominent youth hockey and figure skating clubs, including the BGSU precision skating team.
"We look forward to celebrating the history of this building and all the people who have spent time here," Bowling Green men's hockey head coach Chris Bergeron said. "To think about the number of people who have been through the doors of the BGSU Ice Arena is overwhelming. Whether they were here for Falcon Hockey, youth hockey, figure skating, or curling, this building has been a big part of Bowling Green for the last 50 years."
It's safe to say from its grand opening in February 1967, to its around-the-clock operation today, no one building in Bowling Green has been responsible for uniting the University and community more than the BGSU Ice Arena. The Ice Arena provides strong home ice advantage for the hockey program, in which the Falcons hold an all-time record of 522-266-59 (.655) in the building, but has also stood as a home base for figure skating and curling as well.
BGSU ice hockey games in particular provide an intense atmosphere matched by few other activities on campus. Over 2.3 million fans have packed the arena over the years, testifying to the loyalty of the BGSU faithful. The Falcons have averaged nearly 3,000 spectators over their 847 varsity home dates.
Since BGSU hockey started intercollegiate varsity competition in 1969, the Orange and Brown has won over 65 percent of its home games. The Falcons, who have had only 10 losing seasons at the Ice Arena, and since the arena's inception, the Falcons have twice posted 10 or more consecutive winning seasons at the BGSU Ice Arena and one stretch of 22 non-losing seasons at the Ice Arena. Over the past three seasons, BGSU has gone 37-14-9 in the Madhouse on Mercer.
The weekend of the 50th celebration will begin Friday, Feb. 10, and will feature a 7 p.m. matchup of Bowling Green high school hockey versus Findlay, while the Mileti Alumni Center will host a Falcon hockey alumni event from 6-8 p.m.
A Bowling Green hockey pre-game event is to be held in the Center Ice Lounge on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 3:30-5 p.m., which will be open to any game ticket holders. After the pre-game event, the Falcons will square off with Mercyhurst in non-conference competition at 5 p.m.
Saturday will then be capped off by a post-game reception open to the public at the Stroh Center at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday, Feb. 12 will feature a figure skating show from 1:30-3:20 p.m.
The Bowling Green men's hockey team will open the 2016-17 season by hosting Windsor in exhibition play on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. at the Ice Arena.
