Miller, Garda Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
September 12, 2016 | Football, General, Volleyball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Scott Miller and volleyball player Madeline Garda.
Male Athlete of the Week
Scott Miller, a sophomore from Barrington, Ill., set new career highs with five catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns as Bowling Green defeated North Dakota 27-26 Saturday. Miller put the Falcons ahead early with a 71-yard touchdown reception and then, after North Dakota had closed to within four points at 14-10, he added a 51-yard touchdown reception with just over a minute to play in the first half. Miller scored the team's final touchdown on an 11-yard reception that gave BGSU a 27-20 advantage. He had 235 all-purpose yards in the contest, the most by a Mid-American Conference player this year.
Female Athlete of the Week
Madeline Garda, a senior from West Chester, Ohio, led BGSU to a 3-0 weekend at the EIU Panther Classic over Sept. 9-10. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. For the week, Garda posted an astonishing 118 digs, which is good enough for a 6.94 digs/set average. She averaged 29.5 digs/match, and also racked up 11 assists and four aces on the week. In the final three matches of the week, Garda posted at least 33 digs. The senior notched 37 digs versus Louisiana Tech, and then followed that up the next day with a 33-dig effort at Eastern Illinois, and concluded the invitational with a career-best 40 digs versus Drake.
