ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In the final match of the Navy Invitational Sunday afternoon, the Bowling Green women's soccer program fought for a 2-1 win on the road after more than 109 minutes of play with host school Navy.
Although the Midshipmen were able to strike first and get on the board with its lone goal in the 55th minute, the Falcons were able to pull through for the dramatic victory with goals by junior Skylar Fleak and sophomore Erica Hubert in the final minutes of action.
"I'm so proud of our team today. This was a hard fought, team win on the heels of our result on Friday," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "We showed tremendous character in dealing with some adversity over the last 48 hours."
Fleak was able to capitalize on a loose ball opportunity in the 87th minute to force overtime with just over three minutes to go in regulation. It was the second match in a row that the Sunbury, Ohio native was able to find the back of the net for the Falcons.
Then with just 21 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Hubert found the back of the net by shooting from 18 yards out while the ball flew past Navy's goalkeeper just underneath the crossbar. It was Hubert's third game-winning goal of the season, and came off of one of her team-leading six attempted shots on the day.
In net, freshman goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve made her first start of the season and was able to hold off Navy's 25 total attempted shots, while marking a total of nine saves in her first career victory. At the conclusion of regulation, Navy held the advantage in shots by a 17-14 mark, and Duwve consistently held off the Midshipmen by stopping all of Navy's additional eight shots through the pair of overtimes.
"Kathleen was incredibly solid in goal on her first career start and definitely made saves to keep us in the game," Coach Basalyga added. "We matured a lot today and are looking forward to one more non-conference opportunity to grow a bit more."
Over the course of the extensive double overtime matchup, the Falcons tallied 17 attempted shots, while 11 landed on goal. Bowling Green also had four players compete for the entirety of the 110 minutes, in Duwve, Hubert, sophomore Alexis Fricke, and freshman Maureen Kennedy.
Up next, the Falcons will complete non-conference competition by facing Fort Wayne on the road. The Falcons will take on the Mastodons Friday evening at 7 p.m.
