ROME – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team started its 10-day Cultural Immersion Tour of Italy on Monday, Aug. 9. The team toured the historic Colosseum, briefly walked around Rome, and took in a welcome dinner in the evening.
Each day, a member of the team will break down the team's adventures, and recap the day. On day one, redshirt-junior Garrett Mayleben – who hails from Milford, Ohio – summed up the program's first day in Italy.
"After two delays, a change of airports, and roughly nine hours on a plane, BGSU basketball finally arrived in Rome, Italy today. We wasted no time checking into our rooms after landing and rushing out to take in some of the most famous sites Rome has to offer. Most notably, this included our guided tour of the Colosseum. As athletes, it was humbling to say the least for the team to take in the history of one of civilizations first (and most brutal) forms of athletic expression. We learned how gladiators were raised up in the ancient Roman public similar to professional athletes are today, as well as how the design of the Colosseum later influenced the construction of modern sports stadiums. Finally, we finished our day with a traditional, full course Italian meal at one of Rome's most delicious restaurants. We're going to bed tonight excited to experience the rest of ancient Rome tomorrow as well as our first taste of international competition on the court."

Tomorrow, the team is scheduled to visit the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain before taking on the Latina All-Stars to close out the day. Above, fans can view some photos from day one, while below is a brief social media recap.
Fans are encouraged to follow the team on Twitter and Instagram at @BGSUMHoops, where photos and videos are posted throughout the day. Rasheed Worrell has also been running Snapchat (Search "BGAthletics").
