FLYNN-TASTIC!
Senior Pat Flynn, BGSU's leading scorer in each of his first two seasons in Northwest Ohio, has picked up right where he left off. Flynn scored a team-high six points as the Falcons posted a pair of wins over the weekend, and on Tuesday (Aug. 30), he was one of 11 players across the country named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week. Flynn had a pair of assists in Friday's win over IUPUI, and he scored two goals in Sunday's victory over Appalachian State. The multiple-assist match on Friday was the first of his career, and the multi-goal contest on Sunday was his seventh as a Falcon. Flynn now has totals of 25 goals, 10 assists and 60 points in just 38 matches at BGSU.
A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• BGSU is off to a 2-0-0 start on the young season. This marks the third-straight season that the Falcons have won the first two matches. Last year's team got off to a 5-0-0 start. The school record for most wins to start a year is six, by the 1978 club.
• The Falcons opened the season with a 4-0 win over IUPUI at Cochrane Stadium on Friday night (Aug. 26). Then, BGSU rallied from an early deficit for a 3-1 win over visiting Appalachian State on Sunday (Aug. 28).
• The Falcons are – obviously – 2-0-0 when scoring two or more goals this season. BGSU is 10-0-1 in such matches since the start of the 2015 season, and the Falcons are now 40-4-5 when scoring at least two goals in the Eric Nichols Era.
• Six different players scored goals for the Falcons over the weekend. Stellar senior striker Pat Flynn was the only player with more than one goal, as he found the back of the net twice in the Applachian State match.
• Senior Joe Sullivan scored a goal in Friday's IUPUI match. Three other Falcons – sophomores Vincent Giannini and Moe Mustafa and freshman Chris Brennan – each scored the first goal of their respective collegiate careers in that win.
• No fewer than five Falcons scored the first points of their BG careers in that match. In addition to Giannini, Mustafa and Brennan, sophomore Peter Pugliese and freshman Robert Miller III found the scoresheet. Pugliese had an assist on Sullivan's first-half goal, while Miller assisted on each of the Falcons' last two scores.
• The Falcons are now 7-1-0 in home openers in the Nichols Era. BGSU has outscored the opposition by a 21-3 count in those eight matches.
• The Falcons are 7-0-1 in overall season openers since Nichols assumed the helm, and BG has outscored the foes, 21-1, in season-opening matches.
• Giannini, Mustafa and Pugliese all now have the first scoring streaks of their BG careers. Giannini assisted on each of Flynn's two goals on Sunday vs. ASU – Giannini's first two career assists and, of course, his first multiple-assist match as a Falcon. Mustafa picked up the primary assist on the game-winning goal, scored by junior Keaton Reynolds in the final minute of the first half, and Pugliese earned the first assist on Flynn's second goal of the day.
• Giannini, Mustafa and Pugliese each played between six and nine matches last season, and did not score a point. This year, through two games, that sophomore trio has combined to score nine points.
• Senior Jacob Roth had two assists vs. IUPUI, the fifth multiple-assist match of his career. Roth added another helper on Sunday vs. ASU. He now has 35 career points at BGSU, and leads all active Falcons with 15 assists.
• Freshman Anthony Mwembia played all 180 minutes in goal last weekend, and has a goals-against average of just 0.50. He made a total of six saves in the two wins, and earned the first clean sheet of his career in his BGSU debut, Friday's win over IUPUI.
'FLYNN & SULLY' SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BUDDY COP SHOW THAT WE'D DEFINITELY WATCH
• A pair of seniors from Naperville, Ill., Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan, ranked 1-2 on the Falcons in scoring a year ago. And, they have picked up right where they left off.
• Flynn, as mentioned, scored a team-leading six points last weekend, with two assists vs. IUPUI and two goals against Appalachian State. The multiple-assist match was the first of his career, and he now has seven multi-goal matches as a Falcon.
• Flynn, in just 38 games at BGSU, has totals of 25 goals and 60 points, and he has moved into the top 10 on both career lists. Flynn is now tied with Dennis Mepham (1976-79) for ninth place on the BGSU career goals list, and has moved past Mepham (59 points) into sole possession of 10th place on the school's career points list. Both lists can be found on page 7 of these notes.
• Sullivan picked up at least one point in each of last weekend's two games. He scored BG's second goal in the IUPUI match, and picked up the primary assist on Flynn's first goal against ASU.
• Sullivan now has a career total of 42 points, with 14 goals and 14 assists.
• Since Flynn arrived at BGSU prior to the start of the 2014 season, the Falcons have scored a total of 74 goals. Flynn and Sullivan have combined to score 37 of those 74 goals.
• Flynn has assisted on seven of Sullivan's 12 goals during that time, while Sullivan has picked up an assist on seven of Flynn's goals.
RANDOM (SOME MIGHT SAY USELESS) NOTE OF THE WEEK
• Senior Pat Flynn is in his third season with the Falcons. In the three regular-season openers in that time, Flynn has had a total of seven points, on two goals and three assists. Not bad, but...
• In the second game of the season, Flynn has exploded for 21 points, icluding 10 goals. He had five goals and 11 points – tying the school single-match records in each category – in BG's 8-0 win over Findlay in 2014. Last season, Flynn had a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Western Illinois. And, on Sunday, he had a pair of goals as BG downed Appalachian State.
SCOUTING MARSHALL
Marshall is 1-1-0 on the young season, and Friday night's BGSU match will mark the team's first road contest of 2016. The Thundering Herd split a pair of home matches last weekend, falling by a 2-0 score to Western Michigan before downing Detroit, 3-1. Seniors Trevor Starcher and Daniel Jodah and freshman Paul Whitener scored the team's goals in the UDM match. Whitener, who was involved in the scoring of all three goals, leads the team with four points. Junior Nate Himes played both matches in goal, and has five saves and a 1.50 goals-against average on the young season. Last season, head coach Bob Gray's team went 8-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Conference USA.Â
A LOOK AT CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State, like BGSU, is off to a 2-0-0 start to the season, and the Vikings – like the Falcons, scored seven goals in their first two matches. CSU downed Dayton, 3-0, at home before stopping Robert Morris, 4-2, on the road. Freshman Gabriel Pewu had five points on the weekend, and was named the Horizon League Player of the Week. while classmate Lawrence Karpeh had four points. Senior Aleksander Drobac drew the start in goal vs. UD and made three saves, while freshman Sebastian Kalk played the RMU match. Drobac led the Horizon League in both goals-against average (0.73) and save percentage (.828) a year ago. CSU was picked to finish fifth in the HL in the 2016 preseason coaches poll. Head coach Ali Kazemaini welcomed back 16 players from last season, including 10 that played in at least 16 games a year ago. The 2015 Vikings went 9-8-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play. CSU plays at No. 5 Wake Forest on Saturday (Sept. 3) before hosting the Falcons four days later.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads Marshall, 7-4-3, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Falcons have a four-match series unbeaten streak. Three of the last four meetings have ended in double-overtime draws, including the last overall matchup, in 2013, and the last meeting at Cochrane Stadium, in 2012. The 2012 match was a scoreless draw, while the '13 contest was a 1-1 result in Huntington. The last non-tie in the series was a 2-0 BGSU win on Sept. 1, 2009, in Eric Nichols' debut as the Falcons' head coach. BGSU is 4-1-1 at home, 1-3-2 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Thundering Herd through the years.
The Falcons and Cleveland State are tied, 15-15-1, in that series, and BGSU has won the last two matchups. Last season, Pat Flynn had two goals and an assist as the Falcons downed the Vikings, 3-0, at Cochrane Stadium. Joe Sullivan added the other BG goal. Two years ago, in the last meeting at Krenzler Field, Jacob Roth scored on a free kick in overtime to give the Brown and Orange a 1-0 win in his hometown. CSU's last series win came in double-OT at Cochrane in 2013. BGSU is 9-7-0 at home and 6-8-1 on the road vs. the Vikings.
AUDEN, ROTH AND SULLIVAN NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS
Seniors Max Auden, Jacob Roth and Joe Sullivan are the tri-captains for the 2016 Falcons. Auden, a fifth-year senior, is serving as a team captain for the second consecutive season.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Cleveland State match, the Falcons will head to Western Illinois for a contest on Saturday, Sept. 10. Then, BGSU will return home to face Wright State in the teams' annual battle for the I-75 Cup. The Falcons and Raiders will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Cochrane.
