Junior Keaton Reynolds also scored for the Falcons, who end the first weekend of the 2016 season with a 2-0-0 record. After the Brown and Orange conceded an early goal to the Mountaineers, Flynn scored midway through the opening period, and Reynolds gave BG the lead for good in the final minute of the first half. Flynn's second goal of the day, in the 61st minute, gave the home team some breathing room.
Flynn, in his third season with the Falcons, now has 25 goals and 60 points in his BGSU career, and he moved into the top 10 on both Falcon career lists with his Sunday performance. Sunday's match was the 38th of Flynn's BG career.
Sophomore Vincent Giannini assisted on both of Flynn's goals, and seniors Joe Sullivan and Jacob Roth and sophs Moe Mustafa and Peter Pugliese each had an assist in the win as well.
After posting a shutout in Friday night's four-goal win over IUPUI, the Falcons found themselves trailing less than three minutes into Sunday's match. ASU's Jordan Melia scored with just 2:18 gone.
Melia's goal came after Stephen Chapman's initial ball was blocked by Sullivan on the right side of the penalty area. The ball caromed up into the air and landed at the feet of Melia, who was stationed in the center of the box. Melia's low shot rolled just inside the right post from approximately 10 yards out, and the Mountaineers had the lead.
The Falcons had several scoring chances as the match neared the 10-minute mark. A cross by junior Brad Macomber was just a little too high for Flynn to reach in the box. A minute later, sophomore Tate Robertson's pass found Sullivan on the left side of the six-yard area, but Sullivan's shot was deflected wide of the far post by ASU 'keeper Jake Chasteen. Then, another BGSU passing sequence -- kept alive when Robertson saved the ball from going out of bounds with a nifty sliding effort -- ended when Sullivan's header went just wide left after a diagonal ball by Roth.
A foul on the Falcons gave ASU a free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the right side, but Daniel Avila's free kick sailed wide.
As the match approached the midway point of the first half, Flynn and the Falcons evened the score. Giannini found Sullivan with a pass from midfield as the Brown and Orange looked to attack, and Sullivan slid a through ball to his right and into the path of Flynn. Flynn, just before reaching the penalty area, blasted a shot that eluded a diving Chasteen to the short side. With 20:40 gone, the match was tied at 1-1.
Not long after the goal, Flynn had another chance, but his shot was wide of the mark, and a Sullivan shot rolled just wide a few minutes later. In the 34th minute, freshman Robert Miller III took a pass from Macomber, headed to the end line and played a cross through the goalmouth, but no teammate was able to reach it.
With just over two minutes left in the half, Miller's long throw-in found junior Alexis Souahy in the box. Souahy, facing away from goal, headed the ball backward, and it went to Roth in the center of the box, but the senior's shot whizzed over the crossbar.
But, in the final minute of the half, the Falcons took the lead. After a foul on the visitors, Roth played a long free kick into the penalty area. Mustafa and Chasteen went up for the ball, and the BG sophomore got a head on it. The ball bounced toward the goal, and Reynolds was all alone to knock the ball into the net from close range. The goal came with just 57 seconds left in the half.
BGSU had a 13-3 lead in shot attempts in that opening half, en route to an 18-10 advantage for the match.
The Falcons had several solid scoring chances in the first few minutes of the second half. A nice one-two passing sequence between Flynn and Sullivan resulted in the latter senior possessing the ball on the left side of the box. Sullivan played a cross toward Robertson on the right side, but the sophomore could not control it in time to get a shot off before a defender arrived. Then, Robertson and Flynn worked a combination play, but that foray was broken up in the box as well.
With 15 minutes gone in the half, though, Flynn gave the Falcons a two-goal advantage. Pugliese played a key role in the goal after he received Giannini's through-ball on the left side of the pitch. Pugliese beat several defenders as he took the ball to the end line. The soph poked a cross to Flynn in the center of the box, and Flynn made no mistake. The Naperville, Ill., native took a touch to create some space between him and his would-be defender, then uncorked a blast that found the right side of the net for a 3-1 lead.
From there, the Falcons maintained that two-goal lead for the rest of the afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia made a save on Chapman in the 69th minute, diving to stop the ASU striker's hard, low shot on the left side of the six-yard box. Just under two minutes later, Mwembia stopped Thibaut Arpinon's effort.
The visitors were credited with a total of four shot attempts over the final 16 minutes of action, but none of them found the goal as three were blocked by BG defenders and the fourth sailed high.
BGSU had nine shots on goal for the match, while ASU put three shots on target. Mwembia made two saves to earn the victory, and Chasteen had six stops at the other end of the field.
Flynn, as mentioned, now has 25 goals and 60 points as a Falcon. He is tied with Dennis Mepham (1976-79) for ninth on the BGSU career goals list, and moved past Mepham (59 points) into sole possession of 10th place on the school's career points list.
The Falcons return to Cochrane Stadium next weekend, hosting Marshall University on Friday night (Sept. 2). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
