Falcons kick off 2016 exhibition schedule at Cochrane Stadium
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team took the pitch in front of an audience for the first time on Saturday night (Aug. 13), as the Falcons faced Oakland University in a scrimmage at Cochrane Stadium. The two head coaches agreed not to keep score, but several Falcon freshmen found the back of the net during the match.
The Falcons and Golden Grizzlies played a total of four 30-minute periods on Saturday. The first period was scoreless, although the Brown and Orange had several solid chances. Senior Pat Flynn was stopped on the line in the fourth minute as the OU goalie was out of position. A defender came over to defend the shot and blocked Flynn's effort off of the line.
In the 27th minute, redshirt sophomore Bismark Agyeman rang a shot off of the crossbar from approximately 25 yards out.
Late in the second period, the Falcons found the back of the net. After a scramble in front, freshman Robert Miller III pushed the spheroid past the goalie.
The Falcons had two goals whistled down in the third period – the first due to a foul in the box and the second when the ball had just crossed the end line before a centering ball was played – before scoring with just 19 seconds left in the period. Freshman Chris Brennan scored off of a pass from senior Joe Sullivan. The ball ping-ponged around the penalty area before Sullivan gathered it and found Brennan. The Oakland 'keeper was caught out of position to stop Brennan's shot.
Brennan scored again in the fourth period, receiving a cross from junior Keaton Reynolds and converting. The OU goalie got a hand on Brennan's shot, but could not prevent the ball from trickling over the goal line.
Oakland scored a late goal, coming from Ryan Goike. Both teams used three goalkeepers in the scrimmage.
The Falcons now prepare for a Friday (Aug. 19) scrimmage at Detroit, with that match scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
