Roos, Falcons Unveil Non-Conference Slate for '16-17
August 01, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Games against Cincinnati and Virginia highlight the home portion of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team's non-conference schedule. Head coach Jennifer Roos and the Falcons will play six non-league games – the highest total in four years – inside the Stroh Center this season.
Five of the Falcons' opponents made national postseason appearances last season, with three foes earning a trip to the NCAA Championships and two more teams advancing to the WNIT. Additionally, another program was just a win away from a national postseason appearance, before falling in a conference tournament championship game.
The Falcons will face three teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, with road games against Louisville and Virginia Tech in addition to the home contest against Virginia.
"We have created a schedule that will be very demanding," said Roos. "We have three games against ACC opponents, and five of our opponents participated in postseason play last season, with several advancing far into those tournaments. This is one of the most rigorous schedules that BGSU women's basketball has compiled in school history."
Â
The Louisville game is part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge, which was announced on June 30. BGSU will meet the Cardinals on Nov. 19, and will face Chattanooga (Nov. 20) and Lafayette (Nov. 21) to complete a stretch of three games in three days at Louisville's KFC Yum! Center.
Louisville (26) and Chattanooga (24) are two of three BG opponents that won at least 24 games last year. Both the Cardinals and the Mocs made NCAA appearances. A total of six Falcon opponents won 18 or more games a year ago.
BGSU concludes the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge with a neutral-site game vs. St. Peter's on Nov. 27 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
The Falcons' total of six non-conference home games is the most since the Brown and Orange played seven non-league games at the Stroh Center in the 2012-13 season.
After opening the regular season at Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 11, the Falcons will begin the home portion of the schedule against Cincinnati four days later (Nov. 15). Following the four games in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge, BGSU will return to Northwest Ohio for three consecutive home contests.
The Virginia game is the middle of those three games, as the Cavaliers come to town on Sunday, Dec. 4. The Cavaliers won 18 games and advanced to the WNIT last season.
Another Virginia-based school, Virginia Tech, also won 18 games and made a trip to the WNIT in 2015-16, and the Falcons will hit the road to face the Hokies on Dec. 11. That is the first of back-to-back Sunday road games against national postseason tourney participants, as the Brown and Orange will take on South Dakota State on Dec. 18. The Jackrabbits won 27 games and captured the Summit League Tournament title a year ago, advancing to the second round of the NCAAs.
BGSU hosts Cleveland State (Dec. 21) prior to the Christmas holiday, and the Falcons' home schedule also includes dates with Davis & Elkins (Nov. 30), Ohio Valley (Dec. 7) and Malone (Dec. 28). Things get underway with an exhibition game against Ferris State on Saturday, Nov. 5.
"We are pleased to take part in the Hall of Fame tournament for several reasons," said Roos. "Since it is an exempt tournament, it allows our team to schedule an additional two non-conference games.
"This schedule, and those additional games, will prepare us for yet another competitive Mid-American slate. Out of the 31 NCAA Division-I conferences, the MAC may be ranked as high as number 11 in the country this season, so we will definitely need to be ready to go when league play rolls around."

The Mid-American Conference schedule will be announced later this summer, and the Falcons will get a jump on the 2016-17 schedule by taking a foreign tour to Cuba in just over a week (Aug. 9-17).
